Request

(Anonymous) 2021-08-26 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm struggling to keep my hold on an original character ATM. Anyone got any tips for getting them fixed more clearly in my mind?

Re: Request

(Anonymous) 2021-08-26 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Decide on a star sign for them and relate their characteristics to this. (eg Harry Potter is a Leo.)

Compare them to a Shakespeare character or a character from a loved TV series or movie.

Or pick an actor's face or voice and use it to fix your character's appearance or speech patterns.

I'm losing motivation on the first fic I've posted without finishing all the chapters beforehand in years. Really the whole reason why I decided to wing it on this one was because it's a recent fandom and I just wanted to be the first one to write this concept lmao, but now I'm reminded why I generally finish my multichap fics completely before actually posting. I'm completely incapable of actually committing to anything XD

Last Books You Have Read or Are Currently Reading?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-26 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
At the moment I'm reading Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell. I didn't think I would like it after how I felt about the second book, but I'm really getting invested in the story this time round.

Currently reading We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal. The beginning was a bit slow and I almost gave up but it's getting better.

Currently re-reading 'Dune' for the first time in probably about 20 years.

Yeeee-ow, there is some stuff in here that I *really* dislike. All the 'breeding' and 'human' stuff, all the sex-slavery and people being bought/bound/enslaved. All the subtle and not-so-subtle anti-woman vibes. And all the people who have like...decades of training in learning secrets and seeing tiny reactions and lies and whatever NOT ACTUALLY BEING ABLE to figure out that someone is a traitor or going to betray them because they keep telling themselves it's inconceivable. Meh.

I'm going to finish it, because i don't remember a lot of it, but halfway through it's getting kind of teeth-gritting.

Currently reading Cursing up a Storm (Witches Murder Club book 1) and it's fun but it's short, so I'm glad that book 2 is already out and I won't have to wait!

My workplace lets me listen to CDs and has a bunch of books on CD. A lot of them are Dean Koontz. I heard his stuff is batshit so I picked up What the Night Knows.

It's...pretty batshit, lol. And surprisingly preachy about Christian values? Lmao.

The last book I read was On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder. I am currently reading And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie.

Rereading Dune again. Also working my way through the 9 volumes and counting of About Time, which is just about the most complete look at televised Doctor Who there is. I'm currently on Volume 4.

Wayword Son didn’t jive me (I pretty much hated everything about it), but I’m looking forward to reading it based on your comment, anon.

Right now, I’m rereading The Blue Castle because it’s one of my comfort reads and I’m having such a hard time at work.

Finished Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue. I really enjoyed it. Likable characters, Percy was cute and sweet and kind of sexy, the plot was fun, the prose was good, and I laughed out loud at some of the lines.

Any Way the Wind Blows is next on my list.

I'm so glad to hear that. I had the same feelings about Wayward Son but just got Any Way the Wind Blows from the library so I'm glad to hear it's not more of the same.

I just did a book binge this week because I couldn't get myself out of bed. So I finished Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, which was fine (broke the rules of her own universe at the end to make the plot work which... ehh) then Wicked Fox by Kat Cho which was good and fun to read, and last The Midnight Library by Matt Haig which was an interesting book to read in the middle of a depressive episode but definitely a good book.

Just finished a read of 'Rebuild All Your Ruins' by E.M. Holloway. Its book 2 of their 'The Sum of Its Parts' series.

Honestly loving it because it was a story that started out as fanfiction (that I read years ago) before it was reworked into an original series and its been so interesting to read the changes and be surprised by the new twists so I don't necessarily know how we are getting to know where we are going.

I’m rereading book I’ve in Skulduggery Pleasant at the same time I’m finally giving Rivers of London another try and also getting around to listening to the latest Chronicles of St Mary’s book. I’m nervous about the St Mary’s book because the last one had a major event that changed the series (again) and I haven’t always liked the new directions the author takes.

Fiction: The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey

It's a surprisingly fun read, considering that the basic plot is "police detective in hospital is bored and decides to figure out whether Richard III killed his nephews," but the writing is good and there have been moments where I've actually laughed out loud. I have no idea if the actual historical evidence in the novel is based in fact, and have no need for yet another internet rabbit hole, so I can't vouch for its veracity, but so far it's been an entertaining read.

Non-Fic: Never Say You Can't Survive, by Charlie Jane Andrews

It's about writing as survival which is exactly what I needed in the current dystopian hellscape. It was only delivered a few days ago (pre-ordered from Bookshop.org) and I haven't had time to read very far into it because work. I've liked what I've read so far, the first exercise gave me at least a little bit of a glimpse of a potential character idea.

"The Absolute at Large " by Capek, which is a Chech satirical s-f novel from 1920s. It's basically about an invention of a new source of energy that has unfortunate by-product in the form of "absolute" (= sth akin to the sense of spirituality), which begins to affect people around it. I'm half way in - it's suprisingly interesting.

Small Victories

Anybody have any small accomplishments they'd like to share?

I know it sounds silly but sometimes those small steps we need to take before we can make bigger moves.

I just put something back to where it belongs and I'm very proud of myself for it. I struggle with follow through, so as small as this was, proud of myself. Anyone else?
