IMO, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Writers get too much crap over not writing for the sake of Art, or to fulfill some inner purpose and they get criticized and called selfish and entitled for enjoying feedback or even needing it to cheer them on. (And YES, this happens - and NOT just to authors who are truly entitled and do stuff like hold chapters ransom.)

Again: There is nothing wrong at all with needing encouragement to create on a regular basis. Anyone who tells you differently is just being a jerk.

I like to write because I enjoy it. But I'd be a liar if I said I didn't enjoy getting kudos or comments. As the anon above said, nothing wrong with wanting encouragement.

Tbh I'm with you, OP.
I also lose enthusiasm when my fics for less popular media don't get much kudos or comments. I'll always finish them but they generally won't be particularly long.
It's fun when people comment, especially when they really get into the fic and start to speculate on what's going to happen next (commenters have even given me ideas for my fics ;))

Yeah online settings based on sites like Tumblr and twitter have really killed the commenting side of fanfics - even if they are based in completely different sites like AO3 and ffnet.

I was thinking about this when reminiscing Livejournal days from forever ago when people commented a lot more as it was part of how LJ worked. These days people tend to consume more than they input (like with scrolling through feeds etc), which is something that has spread onto fanfiction communities.

I only write oneshots for small fandoms. That way I can get it out and enjoy the occasional comment or kudos when it happens without having to motivate myself to write more lmao.

I get this, OP. I worked on a multi-chapter fic for three months, took great pains to make it as realistic and as in character as possible, and just got crickets in return. On the one hand, I know it didn’t do so well because it was more of a gen fic with a romantic pairing in the background, but on the other hand, it was pretty disheartening because damn, a whole lotta work for nothing.

I try to find enjoyment in my own writing though, as hard as that may be. I know I’m not the best, but I wrote a story I wanted to see and now I can read it instead of just daydreaming about it.

I wouldn't mind not getting comments and kudos so much if I could just somehow KNOW that people are reading and enjoying, but yeah, no way to know that unless readers speak up (hit counters are worthless to me). I try to remind myself that getting no comments is better than getting nasty ones. And I feel fortunate that I DO write for myself first and foremost. It's my escape, and all the hours of work I pour into each chapter is worth it, even if some don't get any comments.

But it's pretty dang disheartening when you're especially proud of something, and you feel SURE people will love this or that about it, and then... nothing. It's human to crave praise.

That's tough and I understand, OP. I get pretty discouraged when my fics don't get many hits or anything else. Even if we do things for ourselves, for our own enjoyment, etc. it always feels nice to be recognized for our hard work. Writing takes a lot of time and work, I think it's safe to say most people want recognition. To not get any engagement or the engagement is very small, to me it feels like no one likes or cares about my hard work. And of course I don't write for the recognition, but it does feel really nice when I get a rare comment or when one of my fics does numbers I haven't seen before. So to not get engagement, it can really start to fuck with a writer's motivation.

Find a friend who likes your writing and send them your fics privately - you'll get a ton of encouragement. That's what I'm doing with one of my best friends, we exchange fics via mail and have started several verses. Now we're writing together for three consecutive years already.

If what you really want is for people to react and give you feedback, maybe you should try something other than writing? Like reblogging/retweeting popular or provocative things and commenting on them, or maybe posting artistic nudes or something like that. Writing takes a lot of time and effort, and if the "journey" isn't worth it for you, it's just a waste of time.

I CAN write for my own enjoyment. I just don’t POST for it. And that means I won’t bother with any fandoms where I receive no feedback or acknowledgment, regardless of the size. But I’ve been told that makes me entitled. (Insert eye roll here.)

Well, what happened was, after hearing for the umpteenth time how horrible his name was, Joey Jo-Jo Junior Shabbadoo snapped, and running sobbing from Moe's, he vowed at that moment to change: not his name, but everything else. From suits worn with buttondowns and bowties to Hawaiian shirts. And glasses? Yeah, he tossed those and got Lasik, only the surgery went wrong and while his eyesight remained fine, he was left with what could only be described as "crazy eyes". No matter, it was just as well to Joey Jo-Jo Junior Shabbadoo, just another old vestige of his former self. He dedicated his life from then on out to making AND eating 200 grilled cheese sandwiches, and he was happy.
