At least they both look like adults (they are both adults, right?). Try being a Professor Layton fan and seeing the top ship is Layton/Luke.

They're definitely both adults (the characters and the actors). I think Obi-Wan was supposed to be around 25 in TPM and Qui-Gon's supposed to be 50-ish. If you dig around in The Lore, it gets weird because Obi-Wan was probably apprenticed to Qui-Gon when he was, like 9. But since that all happened off screen and none of it is real, it's easy enough to ignore unless you're looking for things to be offended by.

So, for most of fandom, not easy to ignore at all.

Depending on whether the novels would still be considered canonical or not, he was apprenticed at 13 iirc.

I think the novelizations of the movies are still canon, except maybe for the parts that are contradicted by newer canon. "Between the scenes" official tie-ins are dodgy because I don't think anyone involved in the films actually reads them except for maybe Mark Hamill.

Either way, if you're coming into it from the perspective of someone who only watches the movies, they're two hot adult men whose relationship hits a lot of kink buttons. And, if you care to do some geeky digging, hits a few of the more controversial kink buttons as well. Not my thing, but sometimes the Star Wars be like that.

Oh, yeah, no I personally ship them though I get why someone might not. I was just adding useless (and probably retconned by now) EU knowledge re:age at being apprenticed.

I ship it and read a lot of Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan fic back in the day, and ime the age gap and the fact that Obi-Wan became an apprentice as a youth wasn't ignored by the fandom at all. Most fans didn't take offense to it, either.

I also read a lot of fic, but it must have been in different circles than you since very little of the smut fic ever focused on Qui-Gon guiding Obi-Wan through puberty until he was old enough to bang. Different strokes and all that.

AYRT

Most of the fic I read didn't show Obi-Wan's teenage years (though some did), but it very much focused on Qui-Gon thinking that he was too old for Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan thinking that Qui-Gon considered him too young and immature, each of them thinking that the other had only paternal/filial or mentor/mentee feelings for him, the two of them negotiating a new relationship with each other as Obi-Wan got older, sometimes examinations of how the Jedi as a whole viewed master/apprentice relationships, etc.

Basically just really leaning into the emotional and sometimes the societal implications of the age gap and of the fact that Obi-Wan became Qui-Gon's apprentice at a fairly young age.
