Favorite/Least favorite music styles

[personal profile] philstar22 2021-08-29 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What are the music styles you love and gravitate towards? What are the styles you can't stand (or mostly dislike with maybe an exception or two?).

I listen to so many different styles, but my absolute favorites are: power and symphonic metal, dance, classic rock, movie scores and trailer music, folk/celtic/viking music, pop, Latin (pretty much any latin style, and electronic. I also love hip hop/rap, but mostly only the stuff that has music in it too, not just rapping.

The styles I'm not big on are jazz, blues, and death metal and gloom metal (or similar metal styles). And while I like some country, I'm much more picky about country than I am other styles and prefer the country/pop mix stuff.

I'm a sucker for ambient electronic, dissonant orchestral music, and most kinds of drum n bass. Also a lot of jangly indie rock.

I can't stand highly theatrical, melodic metal. I'm also mostly anti-sophistipop; I make an exception for Everything But The Girl.

I love drum and bass stuff. If music has a lot of drumming in it, I'll probably like it.

Melodic medal is the kind I love best, though, and I love the fun, theatrical stuff. I like the metal sound, I just like it with a more orchestral or melodic sound to it. I mostly stick with symphonic and power metal.

I can give a listen to most things, but my favorites are indie and classic rock and electronic.

My least favorite is that bro country stuff. When a business is playing it I always try to get the fuck out of there asap.

The genre I listen to most is easily rock, specifically a lot of 70s album-oriented rock, and a lot of 80s and 90s alt-rock. New wave, punk, college rock, indie rock, some pop rock from the 90s, lo-fi, singer-songwriter-y folk stuff, jangle pop. All of that. Outside of rock I listen to a lot of 70s soul and funk. Plus some pop and electronica, some hip hop, some random 80s stuff I guess.

I think the only genre that I fundamentally dislike is prog rock - I just find it too windy and self-absorbed. I also don't listen to a ton of metal but I don't mind metal, I'm just not usually in the mood for it.

I don't understand what's going on with industrial or computer music. Like, it's literally just noise to me. I like 2099 by CharliXCX, but it's going some melody going on.

There are some genres where I only the popular stuff, or only certain subgenre's of it (I've only liked very popular metal songs for instance). Like I love old country, bluegrass, and most country by female singers, but it's rare for me to like any new country by the current crop of men, or bro country which can die. I feel like a culture traitor because I'm very very picky about rnb.

I love everything else.

I can't stand EDM and trance music. And whatever type of metal it is that's extremely noisy and involves a lot of roaring.

I love indie, rock, folk, alternative, and some pop. I love pretty much any of those genres combined. I'm open to punk and grunge, though mostly I prefer the somewhat softer examples of those genres. I don't like when music makes me wince and want to cover my ears.

I apparently really, really enjoy experimental. The exact genre of experimental doesn't even matter; it's just happened far too many times that when I think, "Oh, this has interesting textures, what is it?", the genre is experimental.

I also love classical music and think Fauré's Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, Op. 45 is bomb.

My least favourite genre is metal, especially screamo. I want to like it, but a minute from most songs is enough to plunge me into sensory overwhelm.

"Through the Fire and Flames" is still sick, though.

What did you do today, FS?

Listened to a lot of Youtube music videos. Spent time out on the porch with my kitty. Did laundry. Trying not to nap, but I had a bad night with a bunch of nightmares that woke me up and kept me awake for a while. So just taking it easy.

Went on a 3.3 mile walk this morning before the sun came up. Made brisket sandwiches with the family. Dozed in bed for too long.

Drove a half hour to check out an exercise equipment place that's closing down, but they're closed on Sundays (doh). It was lunchtime, so we went to this new restaurant/bar that was pretty cool. It was busy but not excessively so, and we sat at the bar and had drinks and lunch. There was NFL football and NASCAR (I think? I don't follow stock car racing lol) on the bigscreens and it felt kinda like a Sunday afternoon in The Before Times, except for everyone masking up, and we had a pretty good time (food was decent too). It was nice to get out of the house again. And yes, we, and pretty much everyone else we encountered today, masked up. :D

Went to the farmers' market, got some fruit, now just hanging out

Nothing really. I need to drag a bunch of stuff to the laundromat and get groceries, but I've been moving slowly and napping a lot and feel like shit. I'm vaccinated, wear a mask indoors, don't have any respiratory symptoms, and my oxygen saturation is normal, but part of me is still worried it's COVID.

Just found out that Lee "Scratch" Perry passed away and I'm a little bummed out.

Found out I've been exposed to Covid, so I'm lowkey freaking out (I'm fully vaccinated, but still).

Cooked two packs of bacon, made a bunch of sales on Poshmark, and played tennis.

Weekend at my parents cabin. Went on my first hike in months and it felt so good to just feel my muscle stretch and work. It's been so nice to spend time in nature and see a lot of wildlife.

Vent:
Had to deal with a lot of difficulties. I helped people but I realize now most are not there for me when I need them. I'm really tired. I have some work to do, but don't feel motivated to do any of it. I'm annoyed and I feel hatred right now.

Mowed the lawn (tried waiting for someone else to do theirs first so I didn't have to be That Neighbor who woke up those sleeping in on a Sunday morning, but come 9:30 I said "Screw it, it's getting too hot to wait longer.") Then I did a long workout at the gym, showered, made waffles for lunch, did some chores, made my lunch for monday, and listened to Youtube videos while working on a sewing project.

Worked on revising my novel, went down to help my grandmother with financial stuff, had pizza, came home and packed because tomorrow is the beginning of my on-site rotation.

Did laundry, had to go all over my apt bldg to do it because some washers and dryers were busted, brought two misplaced priority mail packages to the correct apartments, had to put up with an anti vaxxer idiot at the bus stop, got groceries, visited my best friend in the hospital.
