Favorite/Least favorite music styles

[personal profile] philstar22 2021-08-29 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What are the music styles you love and gravitate towards? What are the styles you can't stand (or mostly dislike with maybe an exception or two?).

I listen to so many different styles, but my absolute favorites are: power and symphonic metal, dance, classic rock, movie scores and trailer music, folk/celtic/viking music, pop, Latin (pretty much any latin style, and electronic. I also love hip hop/rap, but mostly only the stuff that has music in it too, not just rapping.

The styles I'm not big on are jazz, blues, and death metal and gloom metal (or similar metal styles). And while I like some country, I'm much more picky about country than I am other styles and prefer the country/pop mix stuff.

I'm a sucker for ambient electronic, dissonant orchestral music, and most kinds of drum n bass. Also a lot of jangly indie rock.

I can't stand highly theatrical, melodic metal. I'm also mostly anti-sophistipop; I make an exception for Everything But The Girl.

I love drum and bass stuff. If music has a lot of drumming in it, I'll probably like it.

Melodic medal is the kind I love best, though, and I love the fun, theatrical stuff. I like the metal sound, I just like it with a more orchestral or melodic sound to it. I mostly stick with symphonic and power metal.

I can give a listen to most things, but my favorites are indie and classic rock and electronic.

My least favorite is that bro country stuff. When a business is playing it I always try to get the fuck out of there asap.

I love all three of those. Very different but all have a lot of awesome songs and great talent.

Hate bro country stuff too. Ugh. Come to think of it, the few country artists I like are both more poppy in their sound and almost all female. Male country songs always sound so arrogant and self-absorbed.

The genre I listen to most is easily rock, specifically a lot of 70s album-oriented rock, and a lot of 80s and 90s alt-rock. New wave, punk, college rock, indie rock, some pop rock from the 90s, lo-fi, singer-songwriter-y folk stuff, jangle pop. All of that. Outside of rock I listen to a lot of 70s soul and funk. Plus some pop and electronica, some hip hop, some random 80s stuff I guess.

I think the only genre that I fundamentally dislike is prog rock - I just find it too windy and self-absorbed. I also don't listen to a ton of metal but I don't mind metal, I'm just not usually in the mood for it.

I love 70s/80s/90s rock. Just music from those years in general really.

I'm super picky about metal and mostly only like specific subgenres. Some of it just sounds like nails on chalkboard to me.

I don't understand what's going on with industrial or computer music. Like, it's literally just noise to me. I like 2099 by CharliXCX, but it's going some melody going on.

There are some genres where I only the popular stuff, or only certain subgenre's of it (I've only liked very popular metal songs for instance). Like I love old country, bluegrass, and most country by female singers, but it's rare for me to like any new country by the current crop of men, or bro country which can die. I feel like a culture traitor because I'm very very picky about rnb.

I love everything else.

IMO being picky about music is exhausting and takes a lot of effort but is basically good

I ultimately agree, both on it being exhausting and basically good, but rnb is a weird spot for me, I think.

I'm super picky about R&B too. A good amount of it is way too slow for my tastes. But there some R&B I really love, especially when they do faster songs.

I think I definitely feel like you do, a lot is on the slower end of medium, which means it's not slow enough to be a ballad and it's a very weird speed. Aaliyah unfortunately is like this to me. People love One in a Million and I just can't do it. But the quicker stuff like Are You That Somebody is great.

I can't stand EDM and trance music. And whatever type of metal it is that's extremely noisy and involves a lot of roaring.

I love indie, rock, folk, alternative, and some pop. I love pretty much any of those genres combined. I'm open to punk and grunge, though mostly I prefer the somewhat softer examples of those genres. I don't like when music makes me wince and want to cover my ears.

I apparently really, really enjoy experimental. The exact genre of experimental doesn't even matter; it's just happened far too many times that when I think, "Oh, this has interesting textures, what is it?", the genre is experimental.

I also love classical music and think Fauré's Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, Op. 45 is bomb.

My least favourite genre is metal, especially screamo. I want to like it, but a minute from most songs is enough to plunge me into sensory overwhelm.

"Through the Fire and Flames" is still sick, though.
