Lol is she new? Do she know how many books are out there with the same title?

I remember when this went down on Twitter (because of course it happened on Twitter) and at the time I thought that the author must be pretty dense, or she was doing it on purpose for publicity. Because even if you think one of the most well known authors in the business has stolen from you, wouldn't you talk to your friends first? Or your agent/editor? And even if your friends are also idiots, your agent/editor would set you straight and prevent you from humiliating yourself in public by making dumb accusations like that.

I guess it's possible the author drank some major woke-flavored Kool-Aid and thought she'd win the sympathy of the internet by calling out a rich white lady and making herself out to be the victim. Oh boy, did that not work out. Adeyemi didn't even have the class to apologize properly.

I just read up on this. Wow. That was the weakest assed "apology" ever and I'll be keeping this author off my reading list.

I just read this book and I remember thinking when I picked it up 'Well, this is the most generic title' so... Wow.

I just can't unconditionally support authors. My favorite YA author was involved in harassing a fellow creative very publicly on Twitter years back and I haven't been able to even look at her books since.

At least Tomi Adeyemi's public embarrassment was so stupid that it would have been entertaining if she hadn't unleashed her supporters on Nora Roberts.

Who was the harassing author?

You know Cozy Werewolf Author and I had a conversation where she said many many authors really think they have something in the copyright sphere, so I honestly think it's a mixture of publicity and misguided righteousness has sort permeated social media so much so that it's now an actual social habit/atmosphere.

Also....how do I put this. People with social media clout have the truly odd tendency to believe that that's the only clout that matters anymore (because they know that their social media clout is what gained them their book deals in the first place), so they can ~call out~ those people in their industry without social media clout. However, NOTHING has supplanted personal connections as power and unless we never meet in person again, I have doubts that anything actually will.

Agreed. And, social media clout does not always equal money. I'm pretty sure Nora Roberts' main demographics are not plugged in on Twitter and that doesn't stop them from buying her books in numbers most authors can only dream of.

lol right? Nora Roberts' readers don't care about this, and thus neither do Roberts' publishers.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-04 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
How did she think she would be able to take on La Nora and not be politely, classily taken to the cleaners?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-04 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Egged on by righteous and faux-woke Twitter followers, I expect. If you live in an echo-chamber, you're woefully unprepared for stepping outside it.

Despite this dumbass controversy, I read the first book, it was decent. The second one was dumpster fire. I feel like she really was angling to get a movie or tv show deal out of this.
