watching some fanvids in a new fandom for the first time in... ugh, years and years. a decade maybe?

and I'm noticing that there's a lot of vids where the vidder puts the lyrics on the video, but not like subtitles at the bottom where you can choose to read them or tune them out, but like. In square blocks in the middle of the frame like they're making a gifset? and it's really super distracting and I can't figure out if it's just a quirk in this fandom or a larger vidding trend I haven't noticed because I've been out of the loop for so long.

I mean. The canon/source is Chinese subbed in English, so I've seen vids that leave subs in when they use show dialogue so you know what's being said, but I can't figure out why the song lyrics are being bounced around the screen when the song itself is already in English? There are so many vids like this that I've seen recced and I really want to watch but it's so distracting I just give up.
