Is fandom getting younger, or are we just getting older? When I got into fanfic in the early 00s, I was 12 and the people whose content I read all seemed to be in their early teens as well. Admittedly this might be because I liked lOlRaNdOm xD stuff, which isn't exactly the domain of mature fans, but I never got the impression fandom wasn't for kids.

Yes, fandom is getting younger. You, who were 12 in the early 00s, are a statistic in the data that shows fandom is getting younger.

Well, when I was 15, everyone in the fandom was 30, and now when I'm 30, everyone's 15. Maybe it's perception bias, but I do notice a shift in attitude, themes that are being discussed, the kind of fic being written that indicate there are more kids now around. Which is only logical since more kids all over the world are getting access to the internet and smartphones.

Fandom just has more people in it in general, so yes there's more teens but there's also more adults. I'd say it's probably the same ratio just larger numbers, but I guess if you spend your time in fandoms that attract teens it's going to feel like there's 'more' of them.

I don't, I just spend time on tumblr. Maybe it's the platform specifics, but tbh, I'm not sure where do you find the bulk of the fandom these days if not there. Thing is, I've been revisiting my old fandoms while staying at home during 2020, and ten years ago, I can swear there were not as many kids in them. The kind of stuff they're writing is especially a wtf to me, cos no one my age would touch it, since it was ridiculed mercilessly (I mean stuff like 'character/you' and such like).
Maybe the proportion did stay the same, but I would guess, kids back in the day were more likely to keep quiet to not be called out on being minors in adult spaces and writing stupid-ass low-quality nonsense. These days, I'd say adults are more quiet, getting fed up with fandom wank over the time and just keeping to their select circles.
