agreed. it's a language a lot of us don't "speak." it's not about not letting us in on the conversation because, ffs OP, this is a story being told, a narrative. while some movies/shows/games/whatever don't subtitle everything being said or written in the background, because it's background noise anyway, not subbing a language being used for story-important dialogue is just not done.

honestly I find it even more gross, these days, to be watching something on netflix from the 90s or earlier and the only subs are (speaking foreign language) like holy shit why not get a translator. I can tell it's Japanese and moreover I can understand that they're actually saying the real dialogue, why is it just "foreign language" holy shit? Aside from weird alien languages in SG-1 or made-up demon gobbledegook in Buffy, it's fine to sub the actual dialogue even when there is someone who can translate for the non-speakers in the scene. it's just good form to make it accessible to everyone. ASL speakers, welcome to the world of having your langauge as accepted as Spanish, Japanese, or Klingon. That should be a good thing.
