I've read most other Christie's but not this one. I saw the adaptation though and it was terrifying, especially the ending. Why was it a let down in the book for you, OP?

Generally speaking, I find Agatha Christie to be a little overrated... decent set up, but meh resolutions.

It wasn't a let down for me, but it doesn't seem to have a climax at all( eta: I say at all, and what I really mean is the last confrontation doesn't really resolve into the last death naturally and so it's muddled). I agree that most visual adaptations do better with this but i don't like the changed ending.

It does feel sometimes like Christie spent a large part of her career hashing out every possible twist-ending variation on the detective story structure, just for the sake of the twist

But yeah I was disappointed too. I guess I would have expected something more... elegant? It was all so mundane.

Finding out the real title was the shocking part for me.

Aw. I love this book (other than the original title). The adaptions, not so much. But the book ending is great.

But... why is a magical not-America fantasy land using specifically American Sign Language anyway?

While it's cool ASL shows up, it feels awkward and shoehorned in a fantasy setting. Like trying to use Morse code which translates into English randomly in a fantasy world then being like yeah, non-Latin alphabet users, you can learn English if you want to understand this code we're putting in that translates specifically to English letters in a world where "English/England" doesn't actually exist. Like what

Wouldn't the fairest way be to use a fantasy sign language and have subtitles for nobody when interpreters aren't around, and assume the spoken language is a magically translated otherland-Common speech being communicated in dubs/subtitles? This seems so awkwardly done

An incredible mood. I'm only familiar with old-school Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat, but I'm suprised that he's become a joke character. I do like how he keeps an action figure of himself because it was his daughter's when she was young, and it has her name written on the foot of it.

Even disregarding the previous attempt at a live-action movie, I don’t know why they keep trying to take series so well suited for animation and force them into live-action. I’d rather see OVAs of “what if?” scenarios, movies about any major encounters as adults (tho I assume LOK has limited their options there), etc. all similarly animated.

That said, I would’ve only had interest in seeing this IF they were going for Zutara in this version. Otherwise there’s nothing about a live-action version that I’d find remotely appealing or worthwhile on a personal level. Considering the real-life age gap between the respective actors, Zutara isn’t happening, so I’ll just continue to enjoy the original series which is so wonderfully animated.

In fact, the only reason I might reconsider is because of these “actual Asian faces” getting the proper spotlight this time, but I don’t really want to watch something I’d otherwise not care about solely for that.
