But... why is a magical not-America fantasy land using specifically American Sign Language anyway?

While it's cool ASL shows up, it feels awkward and shoehorned in a fantasy setting. Like trying to use Morse code which translates into English randomly in a fantasy world then being like yeah, non-Latin alphabet users, you can learn English if you want to understand this code we're putting in that translates specifically to English letters in a world where "English/England" doesn't actually exist. Like what

Wouldn't the fairest way be to use a fantasy sign language and have subtitles for nobody when interpreters aren't around, and assume the spoken language is a magically translated otherland-Common speech being communicated in dubs/subtitles? This seems so awkwardly done

I'm not sure I understand how this is different from subtitles for foreign language dialogue?

Somehow I think the jump from animated->live action as a whole was the bigger factor in that

Not to say there isn't racism in fandom spaces (there is), but with the rise of C-Drama, K-Drama and Kpop, I don't think that a majority of fandom is inherently unattracked to Asian faces?

That said, I personally have zero interest in this show so far. But that has less to do with the actors and more with a general apathy for live action adaptions for things that work arguably better as animation.

I mean I don't remember shipping fandom jumping all over the original live action Avatar movie either, they just continued on shipping the animated versions all this time

I mean, they do all speak a real world language (English), so why wouldn't they use a real world sign language (ASL) as well?

That's why I'm saying, it's easier to have "everyone speaks a Common otherland language that is relayed as English to you when you watch it," vs. having them speak "English"

Where did English come from in the fantasy world that has no England?

I think I liked it. A lot of it is clear from context anyway or it's just not necessary for following the scene. And then it's a nice thing for ASL users or anyone who just looks it up online

I also like it when (non-essential) lines in a foreign language don't get subbed: If I speak it, it's pretty cool to catch, if I don't and I am super into the show I can look it up or I can just follow along, it's fine...

But can't you have the same work around in your head for the ASL? Like yeah, it doesn't really make sense that this fantasy society uses ASL or speaks English but we are using those to relay it to you.
