I saw ship tease between Anne and Diana in Anne of Green Gables back when I first read it and I didn't even know what shipping was at the time.

Me too. I was always torn because I loved the Anne and Gilbert relationship, but I also loved the idea of Anne and Diana together.

written in 1917 for 8 year old children? definitely not a deliberate shiptease. but I would never judge you for shipping it or making shippy fanworks for it, because that's what fandom is for - taking canons entirely out of context and playing with them the way we want. honestly if anything is ripe for fanworks, it's Baum's books. correct the sexism, make a grimdark twist, explore barely-mentioned locations, go nuts!

I don't think you can state that last bit unequivocally.

The fact that they MOVE IN TOGETHER after their adventure with Dorothy, just because they want to stay together? I mean, look, I was shipping it long before I knew what shipping was. Before I had any idea I was myself a Friend of Dorothy, for that matter. In retrospect it says something about me that Oz was one of my very first obsessions.

And they pretty much acted as team parents for the trip as well.

Have you seen the Tin Man mini-series? If not, you definitely should go watch it.

It was common to write close (platonic) friendships with that level of intimacy, back in the day, without necessarily intending any sexual subtext. (Though sometimes they did.)

That said, it's also v. common for fans to make ships out of close friendships. Shrug. Emotional intensity is sexy. If you're not giving other people a hard time for not reading that pairing the same way, I hope you have fun with those two. (They are very cute.)
