It was common to write close (platonic) friendships with that level of intimacy, back in the day, without necessarily intending any sexual subtext. (Though sometimes they did.)

That said, it's also v. common for fans to make ships out of close friendships. Shrug. Emotional intensity is sexy. If you're not giving other people a hard time for not reading that pairing the same way, I hope you have fun with those two. (They are very cute.)
