I was a fairly popular writer in a fandom a while back, known mostly for writing a lot of ship fic for one particular pairing. I actually wanted to flex my muscles a bit and see how writing gen/horror for the season would feel, and I had a really great idea that I was so excited to write, but... I got the first chapter out and the reaction was so disappointing that it took all the wind out of my sails. Very very few hits, and of the few people that did read it, mostly just "so when is x/y getting together" or "isn't z getting too much screen time?" or "this isn't like the rest of your fic :("

So I guess the answer is, write that fic! But be unknown when you do it if you want any chance of people actually reading and enjoying it. :(
