(Anonymous) 2021-09-17 01:56 am (UTC)(link)Wow. I would love to make a full time living off my books and at let's see, 2.50 profit on an ebook and .25 on a paperback (the POD books aren't great quality so, I don't like charging more for them) I'd have to sell 10,000 ebooks to make 25K a year. That means I'd be selling HALF the amount of books a fantasy or scifi author with a traditional publishing contract sells. (B/C fantasy and scifi aren't as huge as you'd think. 20 to 30K sales of a book in the opening month is a big deal.) Yeah, well, not happening. So, if I want to make money, I have to have 2 or 3 jobs. And/Or Have a patreon. I've got my books, my dev editing, and a youtube channel all trying to bring in money creatively on a flexible schedule due to health reasons. Welcome to the hustle economy. It sucks. I don't call my writing a hobby or a "side job" in public b/c I don't view it that way. I still deserve to be compensated for the hundreds of hours worth of work and the price of a coffee isn't too much to ask is it and it sucks I feel I need to put my book up for free somewhere to try and find an audience for it and do other things in order to bring in cash. And if I did call it a Hobby or a side job it's depressing you would just assume I don't need the cash and not compensate me if you liked the book.
Or leave a review. Or tell your friends about it. (which is social proof marketing much more useful to me.)
It's a sad world when only the rich can actually afford to write. (And their viewpoint gets so tiring, kind of like this secret.) Your privilege is showing. During a pandemic no less.
Everyone else, thank you for the support you've been putting in this thread for writers and artists. It's appreciated. You give me hope.
