It’s not either-or. Some people have part-time jobs.

You know that some people don't make enough on their books to write full time, right?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless you know for a fact that their other job is like, heiress, or stockbroker, or something like that, that's a pretty crummy thing to do

I mean, I'd love writing to be my career, but what percentage of authors are able to live off writing alone as a source of income? How wealthy do you have to be to pursue writing full-time?

Calling it a side job or a hobby is just reality for most people. We can't afford to take risks like that because there's not enough to fall back on if it fails.

You sound like you might be wealthy and don't understand the concept of people needing multiple jobs to make a living. Also, even if they are doing it for fun, does that mean they don't deserve to be paid for their work?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-17 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
jeez well THAT'S sure an opinion to have.

Is it so bad for writing to be a hobby? Its not like its going to devalue the work itself.

hobbies don't mean their work doesn't deserve to be compensated???????

(Anonymous) 2021-09-17 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like a right stuck up shit.

Just because it's somebody's hobby and not their main job doesn't devalue their writing. I'd love to be a full time writer but unfortunately I need a job that can provide me with health insurance for meds so I don't fucking die.

The people you're choosing to shortchange are probably the people who need the money the most. So fuck you.

Cool, the next time I have to move, I'm not going to pay the moving crew if any of them are doing it as a side job or just because they like doing it. Or the local gal I buy my hatching chicken eggs from, I'm just going to take the eggs without paying her, because she's breeding those chickens as a mere hobby. The guy who's fixing our surgery spotlight at work, he does that as his 'retirement hobby', man I better go tell our office manager we can save a few hundred bucks. Clearly the guy's not taking the task seriously enough to deserve to be paid.

Stop thinking this shit is okay to pull on artists when you would never do it to other people (or maybe you would, in which case at least you're being an equal-opportunity thief, I guess). Making art your main source of income is INCREDIBLY difficult. Most professional artists I know have a second job that's not related to their art field, OR they have multiple jobs within their field. Or they're lucky enough to have a very understanding and supportive spouse who has a full-time job themselves.

Yeah you suck. But this thread is amazing! I’m glad there are people out there that don’t think it’s cool to steal from artists.

My favorite author did it as a hobby for the first series of books but thanks to steady sales and Patreon he was able to quit his job and write full time. Full time of course meaning when he wasn’t taking care of the kids because without his job they couldn’t afford daycare.

Artists have lives, often they have people who depend on them, they need food and shelter and medical care and transportation. You’re stealing all of that from them.

Wow. I would love to make a full time living off my books and at let's see, 2.50 profit on an ebook and .25 on a paperback (the POD books aren't great quality so, I don't like charging more for them) I'd have to sell 10,000 ebooks to make 25K a year. That means I'd be selling HALF the amount of books a fantasy or scifi author with a traditional publishing contract sells. (B/C fantasy and scifi aren't as huge as you'd think. 20 to 30K sales of a book in the opening month is a big deal.) Yeah, well, not happening. So, if I want to make money, I have to have 2 or 3 jobs. And/Or Have a patreon. I've got my books, my dev editing, and a youtube channel all trying to bring in money creatively on a flexible schedule due to health reasons. Welcome to the hustle economy. It sucks. I don't call my writing a hobby or a "side job" in public b/c I don't view it that way. I still deserve to be compensated for the hundreds of hours worth of work and the price of a coffee isn't too much to ask is it and it sucks I feel I need to put my book up for free somewhere to try and find an audience for it and do other things in order to bring in cash. And if I did call it a Hobby or a side job it's depressing you would just assume I don't need the cash and not compensate me if you liked the book.

Or leave a review. Or tell your friends about it. (which is social proof marketing much more useful to me.)

It's a sad world when only the rich can actually afford to write. (And their viewpoint gets so tiring, kind of like this secret.) Your privilege is showing. During a pandemic no less.

Everyone else, thank you for the support you've been putting in this thread for writers and artists. It's appreciated. You give me hope.

I really don't understand this. If you liked the author's book, why wouldn't you support them so they can write more? Very few people can make a living out of creative endeavors and most writers and other artists have full or part-time jobs to make ends meet. Plus, there's nothing wrong with treating writing (or anything else) as a hobby.
