I really don't understand this. If you liked the author's book, why wouldn't you support them so they can write more? Very few people can make a living out of creative endeavors and most writers and other artists have full or part-time jobs to make ends meet. Plus, there's nothing wrong with treating writing (or anything else) as a hobby.
