101. ...What's so bad about their female characters? Bo Peep was kinda bad, yeah, but what about characters like (oh shoot I forget her name) the chef in Ratatouille? Or Dory in Finding Nemo?

131. LOL XD Man, I feel weird when I see that song used in some AMVs...I saw one based around Sousuke from FMP! once in an AMV contest, and it was very well edited, but...it's been two years and I still to this day can't figure out how the lyrics of the song relate to Sousuke (or FMP!) at all.

Not OP, but...

The chef was named Colette, and I really liked her! She was a really great take on the whole "there's only one girl, but she's the most capable person there" cliche that keeps coming up in fiction, and the "girls must be tough!" one, too. I love how her character development had her become more independent from what her coworkers thought of her at the same time as she softened out a bit, since I rarely see those things together-- the girl always has to toughen up in order to become her own person, but can't being too tough and isolated (especially when it's just to get the respect of other people) be just as unhealthy as being too accomidating?

I don't really know if I'm a feminist or not, but I think in terms of writing women dealing with sexist situations in realistic/healthy way, Colette's one of the better characters I've seen. :3

Yeah, that's what I felt when I saw the movie, too. Sometimes films almost seem to give the message that you're not strong as a woman unless you completely cut yourself off from every emotion you feel (outside of "manly' emotions like anger). It was nice to see a film show the difficult side of that mentality, then allow the female character to soften a little...without turning her into a damsel-in-distress or taking away any of her strength.

The problem is not the characters themselves so much as it is that (with the lone exception of The Incredibles) there's generally only one significant female character per Pixar movie. If the gender ratios were reversed - one male voice, and maybe one or two minor ones that get a handful of lines each, in a sea of female ones - everyone would realize it was strange.

Ah, the ratios, gotcha. Yeah, I can see what you mean. In fact, I'm taking Social Psychology this semester and we just covered this currently. I'd agree with you there, the ratio is pretty off--the Toy Story series and Bugs Life in particular stand out in my mind.

If that's what the complaint about is, though, it seems a little odd to single out Pixar. It's a flaw in American culture--you don't see this just in Pixar movies, but in the large majority of our movies. At the very least, the female characters that do have an active role in Pixar films are often very strong ones. And what about The Incredibles? Counting in my head...on the male side you have Mr. Incredible, Dash, Frozone, and the villain whose...name slips my mind. Er, and I guess you could count Jack-Jack...maybe. On the female side you've got Mirage, Edna, Elastigirl and Violet. That's pretty much even, isn't it? You could argue that Edna and Mirage are more side characters, but so is Frozone (and definitely Jack Jack) and the villain is...well...the villain. So it still seems to be a pretty good ratio.

Also, with Ratatouille...at least with the kitchen crew, they couldn't have added very more female characters, since the reality is that it's hard for a woman to break into that world. That's kind of part of the point of her character. I guess you could've added more female rats, but...I doubt you'd be able to find very many strong female roles you could work into that.

Yeah, Pixar isn't perfect, but I still think they're a step in the right direction--particularly in comparison to some of the other films out there.

Toy Story also had the cast balance pretty justified. Woody and the other toys belonged to a young boy- not many of them would be female, because they don't make many toys of female characters marketed towards boys.

I'm not saying they couldn't have added more female toys to the cast with plot devices, but the setup isn't ideal for a more balanced cast.

The villian of The Incredibles is named Syndrome.

I was actually going to say that, but the thing is...they could've easily made the toys belong to a girl, and--because the way our culture works--it might've made more sense for her to have more male toys. So if we're being really nitpicky, they still could've changed that.

Syndrome! That's his name, thank you. <3
