I get it, i do. Tons (probably most) fandoms focus on the m/m relationships even if they're not even CLOSE to being cannon and usually stick the women (who're supposed to be the cannon to their slash relationship) on the altar to burn.

Though there are a few shows where the slash involve shoving the men up there and rooting for the f/f side of the story.

No offense intended, i know loads of wonderful feminists and i'm sure you were just angry when you wrote this and it probably comes off more hostile and whatnot than you intended.

But, really. Really, really? Have we so quickly reverted to where using something that isn't socially acceptable in a show (and or fandom) is worth wanking over?

There are shows making fun on feminists, transsexuals, misogynists, homosexuals, lesbians, Americans, Arabs, whatever.

So when shows use misogynistic males, it's automatically a reason to bring out the torches? Just because they didn't want and or have a strong female lead? That's ridiculous. Not every show is going to be driven towards that, and not ever fandom will either.

Let's be honest, every woman in the world wants to be the female (and in some cases) male counterpart to their favorite shows hero, even if that means hating on one of the characters just because of the role they play.

i don't like other girls, i only have male friends... that makes you and idiot, and a dumbass.

that's got to be the most hateful, cruel thing i've ever heard.

I never had any close female friends when i was growing up i stuck with the guys it wasn't because i hate girls, the just didn't seem to like me which wasn't a big deal, we didn't have a lot in common, i didn't really find any women i got along with until college.

Your secrets talks about all the strides women have made, and the things they fought for to make us equal.

Part of being equal is dealing with the fact that not everyone agrees with you, not everyone likes everything you like. Especially that not every little thing (especially something a invalid and FICTIONAL as fandom) is trying to stick it to those accomplishments and values.

Like i said, this is in no way trying to be mean. I get it that you're sick of women hating on women...for being women. But the reason they're hating on women is driven from the perspective of a fictional primetime show, they're not trying to stab their female-coworker in the back so their male-coworker can get her job.

But it seems like the OP is saying that the people who do hate girls use that reason for only befriending guys are the idiots.

fair enough it that was the main intent.

but it doesn't come across that way.

like i said i get what she's saying, but she's sort of got a mean way of saying it.

okay then, the OP probably wasn't talking about you. lol @ everyone being so defensive.

The rest of the comment... wut.

I think you have a good reply...I was reading down and I don't get why people are so confused/jumping on it O_o The OP did come off as a bit hateful there.

Then again once someone announces they're a feminist I tend to tune them out XD;

Re: 103

The irony of you saying that with a Xena (I think?) icon is staggering.

Re: 103

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, not all Xena fans are feminists. I LOVE Xena, but I'm certainly not into feminism (nor do I really hate it, I just tune it out).

Re: 103

[identity profile] one-hoopy-frood.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Do you believe that women should have the right to vote, and should get equal pay for doing equal work? If you said yes to either part of that question, then you are a feminist. And that is just to name a few of the broadest examples.

Re: 103

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's like the people who support the idea of women as people means they're feminists.

You just stretched the definition of the term to meaninglessness, quite frankly. :p Feeling they deserve equal rights as anyone else doesn't mean one is a feminist, unless you're absolutely dying to slap a label on everyone.

Re: 103

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Care to get into why, or is it because you don't agree with what I'm saying? xD Because different point of view =/= dumb.

Re: 103

[identity profile] kayleen-san.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, that IS the definition of feminism. Viewing women as equals and thinking they deserve equal rights...thinking they are ACTUAL PEOPLE. You would be surprised how many people don't think that's the case.

DING DING DING! Give the girl a prize!

Feminism is supporting equality for women. It's acknowledging they deserve the same rights anyone else has. If you believe that you are a feminist.

Godamn, the stupidity is staggering.

[agrees]

Everyone is all about labels and telling people what they are, what they aren't, and what they should be.

I think the biggest problem here is that people often just use "feminism" to refer also to "radical feminism" and "extreme feminist" which are the branches I have problems with, which is why I'm not always so comfortable using the term applied to myself.

Broad being the key word.

Your questions lump everyone on the planet into either being a feminist or a bigot. While some feminists claim feminism is the idea that women are people, it's a bit too broad to have much meaning in any kind of a discussion.

Re: 103

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, Xena is feminist. Smart, strong, confident, doesn't need a man in her life to be fulfilled, all the things feminists want to work towards. If you don't care for feminists, why would you like her?

Re: 103

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Umm...so many things wrong with that comment! Key reason for liking her?

Because Xena is cool!

And also, I like to think her character is deeper than "lol feminism". If that's all people think Xena is or thing that's the biggest part of her character, they need to take another look!

Xena isn't a feminist. Or for some fans, JUST a feminist. She doesn't say "fuck men", you wouldn't find her in a march for women's rights. She does what she does to help people, male or female. She's a hero.

Also, as far as not needing a man in her life to be fulfilled no, she doesn't - but she still fell in love with a few men, which I think a lot of people forget. I know falling in love with men doesn't mean you can't be a feminist, but people arguing that point tend to conveniently forget the men in her life anyway.

Re: 103

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Xena is cool BECAUSE she's feminist. She's like Wonder Woman that way, although with a bit less of the whole bondage thing. The kind of sword-swinging ass-kicking she does? Pre-feminism you'd be very hard pressed to see that presented as a positive, reasonable thing for a woman to be doing.

Nothing wrong with men in your life, the problem crops up when you can't live as an independent person without one. Xena can.

Xena is way cool.

And the fact she doesn't go around beating her chest about feminism? Makes her more of one, IMO. Seriously, I have a job where I have to compete with men. I don't get up every morning going "oh, how am I going to outfox those sly menfolk today?" I just do my job.

And you're right, even if Xena is a feminist - that's not what defines her character. She's a hero, which transcends gender IMO. Why should she or Wonder Woman be looked at on gender any more than Batman or Spidey? I like them all for different reasons.

I think if you go over three sentences in an explanation, it must exceed the readable word limit for some people, judging by some the responses you've gotten. I didn't have any problem understanding this. (But I am frequently mistaken for one of those horrid misogynistic slash fans, too, since I don't slavishly kiss the feet of every female character I run across.)

I don't really care much about the rest of this comment, but I have to agree with this little bit so hard. Up until just recently, girls have treated me like shit except for my best friend and girls I know on the internet. I wanted to be friends, but I just wasn't pretty enough, didn't have enough money, and wasn't into boys and cosmetics enough. I heard the things they said about me behind my back and that's why I hung out with boys. Boys were honest with me and so long as I didn't try to force my rules on their sandbox, they were very open with me and we had a lot of fun together. Now? Now it's different. I've found less shallow women to hang out with since I got into college, but high school was seriously hell for me.
