(Anonymous) 2021-09-20 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)I think there are legit ways to determine bad endings in an objective way: it being tonally off, characters coming out of nowhere in the last second, characters ending up 10000 miles away from where they narratively should have been, etc. But I also think fandoms aren't always so good at determining this and conflate 'I didn't get what I wanted' with 'bad ending', which isn't really how it works.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)I don't actually think that truly bad endings happen all that often tbh, there are definitely some and they of course stand out and get remembered, but most of the time I think most endings are fine or make sense and whether a person likes it or not is going to depend entirely on where they're coming from emotionally. Which I get because this happens to me as well, but I try to de-tangle my feelings after the initial hit to judge whether I dislike something because it was actually badly written, or because I wanted something to happen and was annoyed I didn't get it.
