excellent points, I would subscribe to that newsletter.

there are historical inaccuracies that influence plot, though, and I think the real issue is the number of casual viewers who only get their historical information from movies - consider the number of people who went nutterbutters about Scottish history and whether they could trace their ancestry to some sexy Scottish laird after Braveheart came out, never minding the sheer volume of inaccuracy involved. There's also a big difference between a biopic and a fantasy-adjacent romp; for period projects that fall in between super-srs-all-accurate-no-fake and Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (or was it zombies? I forget) there's so many chances to zig instead of zag that wouldn't affect the storytelling or the aesthetic, and yet someone decided to zag, and now the general populace thinks something wildly wrong is actual historical fact and can't be arsed to look up the truth. Because why should they? it doesn't ring as false, so they can go on believing the wrong thing and maybe spouting it like they know some crazy history fax at a party.

This exactly.

Some of us actually are descended from probably not so sexy Scottish lairds, and already knew that meant literally nothing even before Braveheart came out.

So that’s my dumb way of saying, I completely agree with what you’re saying. Too many people bring pop culture interpretations into real history without knowing the difference. It’s not something that bothers me, most of the time.

But I’d rather not have well-meaning people embarrass themselves by stating their misconceptions as fact in front of people who know better, so I’m left agonizing on whether I should correct people or not. It sometimes feels rude and intrusive, and other times feels necessary.
