Some of us actually are descended from probably not so sexy Scottish lairds, and already knew that meant literally nothing even before Braveheart came out.

So that’s my dumb way of saying, I completely agree with what you’re saying. Too many people bring pop culture interpretations into real history without knowing the difference. It’s not something that bothers me, most of the time.

But I’d rather not have well-meaning people embarrass themselves by stating their misconceptions as fact in front of people who know better, so I’m left agonizing on whether I should correct people or not. It sometimes feels rude and intrusive, and other times feels necessary.
