I try to avoid complainy YouTube “analysis” videos, but it's great to find a rare good one with well-thought-out analysis and a minimum of emotional hyperbole.

Despite the clickbait-y titles, these two are probably my favorites.

I had been trying very hard to convince myself I was enjoying these shows. After watching the videos, I finally acknowledged the flaws I had been trying to ignore and let go of a ton of repressed frustration.

S!B I hate that I sometimes need someone else to tell me “it’s okay to not like this” before I can actually admit that to myself.

I think an essayist I watch actually talked about how, maybe it was the Sherlock one, was really good, but all of the copycats off it were pretty bad and therefore colored the perception of the original

That’s the annoying thing about finding rare good analysis on YouTube. It makes me want more and then I remember that for every good video there are 100 bad copycats.

I remember watching the Sherlock one for the first time. I was all like "urgh too long, I ain't watching all that" but then I did. Because I got sucked in and it made me feel better about being a fan of the show but absolutely hating some of the choices the show made to the point where I realised it was ok to just let go and move on. After season 2 I was always grasping for something to justify why I didn't like A but ok B was fine so I'll keep watching, and it was like I was frightened to admit that I wasn't really enjoying it anymore.

I don't think I ever actually watched that Sherlock video. I've always been slightly disinclined to watch it because there were elements of the first two seasons I actually really liked, and so often when people criticize Sherlock I feel like they crap on every single element of the show, which bums me out a little.

But maybe I should go watch it now. I mean, I hated S3, and didn't even bother with S4, plus I can admit that the first two seasons had plenty wrong with them (and, in fact, a lot of what seemed good about them when they aired seems kind of hollow now that we know all that seeming potential gets thrown into the trash).

I love the Sherlock one, so I went to check out the Doctor Who one, and is it seriously 5 hours long???

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I’m kind of shocked that I actually watched the whole thing (although not in one sitting). I’d say it’s worth checking out a section or two. It’s pretty well thought out and organized for such a long video.

FIVE HOURS?? I. Okay.

The pandemic has given me a strange love and affection for what I think of as comedically long youtube vids. Sarah Z's deep dives into fandom, Jenny Nicholson's Vampire Diaries vid, Contrapoints vid on envy.

But five hours is. Even just having it on in the background while I do something else, it's like, what am I gonna do for five hours straight? It's a no from me dog.

I don't understand why they don't split them up into multiple parts. Surely that would help their views? I know I would be way more inclined to watch a series of shorter videos than one ridiculously long one.

The creator usually does split his videos into parts if they would go on for more than an hour. So that makes his decision to let this one video be 5 hours even more baffling.

Sherlock is one of those shows where it's really hard to pinpoint exactly why it's so utterly shite. When I first read a blog about it where they put my feelings about that show into words it was such a relief. It's stupid, but because I couldn't parse it to myself I just made myself keep watching it.

Could you possibly link that blog? I enjoyed it -- granted I did not interact with fandom about this show -- and my biggest complaint was that it often thought it was too clever for itself (it gave me that smarmy self satisfied feeling like "haha, audience, you won't be able to parse things out") and everything else was not annoying enough for me to claim it was a shit show. But I'm always curious to hear other opinions!

AYRT I'm so sorry, it was years ago that I read it and I couldn't find it again! There are a few blogs put there if you Google 'why is Sherlock bad'.

Nah, all you have to do is be a fan of the original stories...
