I saw a post on some site once that said something like, "I'm glad I don't light up a room. Those people always seem to be the ones who wind up murdered."

Seriously, though, yeah, I can agree with this sentiment. Talking about a victim/loved one in positive terms and all that is understandable, of course, but it would be nice to get away from some of the constant cliché lines that always seem to pop up in these kinds of stories.

And I agree on the whole lament of "Oh, now they'll never be a wife/mother.", too. It would be nice to hear more about other parts of their lives that they're not going to get to experience now they're gone - traveling, getting their dream job, continuing with some hobby they were really passionate about, etc.

they are always described as beautiful. I guess unattractive people make lousy victims. I won't mention any names or the details of the crime to preserve some anonymity but I remember one young woman who was the victim of a terrible assault being repeatedly described as "attractive".
She looked like an anteater.

I have nothing t add, but yeah, I totally agree. This kind of thing really rubs me the wrong way.

Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Thinking about it, I believe the words that most often come up from when they describe men who were victims is 'strong' or 'tough' and I feel like 'brave' and 'stubborn' also frequently come up. Now, those all tend to come up when talking about survivors, but the contrast for the women versus the men when the victims are dead is pretty striking and very much set in those gender roles.

As a side note, while I totally understand where it comes from, it does seem like most victims 'light up a room'.

A friend of mine was murdered (some years ago) and these were exactly the cliches used by people who didn't know her very well and just wanted to talk about how shocked they were. People who knew her talked about things she actually did or wanted to do, like she raised money for digging wells in African villages and wanted to work in global aid, she loved rollerblading but was terrible at it, and she was really funny but in a deadpan way so you'd have to think for a minute if she really said that.

So it makes me think anyone saying those things is just feeling close to the event of her death, not actually to her.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Reminds me of that part of a John Mulaney routine where he jokes about the New York Post always bringing up the attractiveness of female victims.

It’s not just that rag that obsesses about beauty instead of actually talking about who these women were as people outside of looks, of course.

That is weird.

Though I will say that I have noticed that even among the intensity of superfans of comics/superheroes, Batfans tend to stand out.

By the way, I really like the way this secret is constructed, funny and surprising.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-25 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like I should actually get into the canon work instead of just reading lots of (probably OOC) Batfamily fanfic.

I try to avoid complainy YouTube “analysis” videos, but it's great to find a rare good one with well-thought-out analysis and a minimum of emotional hyperbole.

Despite the clickbait-y titles, these two are probably my favorites.

I had been trying very hard to convince myself I was enjoying these shows. After watching the videos, I finally acknowledged the flaws I had been trying to ignore and let go of a ton of repressed frustration.

S!B I hate that I sometimes need someone else to tell me “it’s okay to not like this” before I can actually admit that to myself.

I don't get the big deal about King Lear. I love plenty of Shakespeare plays and people are always telling me that Lear is one of his best, but I just can't see it.

No matter who they cast, the characters aren't compelling. The story is basically...a lot of tedious angst, some on-stage gore, a lot of nonsense in the wilderness, and then a very rushed ending.

I fundamentally don't understand why people praise it so much. Even the language is dense and not particularly beautiful or clever.

Dear anon who asked for Shakespeare secrets: this is my best attempt, sorry I don't have more Shakespeare-wank to offer

I found these pictures of mha characters as cheerleaders and fell in love. I've already created an oc that can be part of this group and cheer and hang out with them.
I've never watched/read any of it though.

I also feel weird about wanting to be in a group with them because I'm a trans guy and I specifically want to be one of the girls.

[Secret Policeman's Ball]

hen I was 9, a family friend introduced me to British comedy. He lent me his tape of The Secret Policeman's Ball (1979), a concert featuring lots of great comedy acts.

It also had the song “Glad to Be Gay” by Tom Robinson.

For the first time, I saw older queer people being not only proud, but proudly angry. It was my first queer anthem and I listened to it over and over again.

Given his mildly conservative politics and emotional obliviousness, I think Bill hadn't given the song a second thought. He never mentioned it, he only praised the comedy.

Honestly, Bill could be kind of a jerk, especially from the POV of a highly sensitive young girl. Still, decades later, I'm grateful that he gave me those tapes even if he didn't completely know what he was doing.

B!S: As a bi/pan person, it is validating to me that the singer Tom Robinson went on to marry a woman, while maintaining that he is absolutely still queer.

The reality is that Doctor Who is primarily governed at this point by its value as an intellectual property and not by any ideas about what it should be as a creative entity

Hello, I was wondering about the secret about Attack on Titan I submitted. It's okay if you felt uncomfortable with publishing it, I just wasn't sure if it went missing or not.
