(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)I know this is entirely subjective, and I promise my tone when talking about this is more pouty and lighthearted than legitimately angry. But I don’t like it when people boil all Ghibli films to aesthetic and pretty art, while generalizing the story and character writing of most of the films with the same brush of “the weak points”. I love the aesthetics and art, but that’s not all there is to the films by these phenomenal creators.
I like the movie adaptation of Howl’s better than the book, but the criticism of the movie adaptation’s characters is so common, and I don’t know if I completely disagree with it. Castle in the Sky is one of my favorites, but the protagonists are definitely the weakest aspect. And I don’t really like Ponyo.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)I've seen most of the Ghibli canon, and it's frustrating when people generalize the films that way. There is a huge range in quality from pretty wretched character and story writing (e.g Earthsea and Pom Poko and many others) to some of the most complex and interesting character writing I've seen (Mononoke and Spirited Away and many others). YMMV on all of this of course. I think people tend to boil Ghibli down "aesthetics and art" because even the bad movies look nice (minus a few).
