i keep seeing comments of people saying shit like "i usually don't care about ads but with you i actually trust it!" and it's like, a fantasy author sponsored by nordvpn. like bro they don't know shit about vpns (and nordvpn had in fact a data breach they didn't disclose for a year winkyface ;)))) and even if they did, they're being fucking paid to say this!! that's what ads are!!!

like i don't get it are people really this stupid. do they really see a person go "hey i'm being paid to say this now :)" and think wow they must objectively love the product like... what. bro what

this is not directly related to what you said but you know. a rant in the stewing

(Anonymous) 2021-10-04 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Given how coveted celebs are to to adverts for all sorts of products, cars/perfume/shampoo/jewellery, I think sadly this kind of marketing really does work en masse, otherwise no one would do it. I'm with you on being boggled at people blindly trusting a stranger on the internet on what to buy, but unfortunately since they all do it it must work very well.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's the thing. For me, I know it's just an ad and I shouldn't trust it any more just because it's coming from someone whose content I like. But I can still feel it working on me, at least partially. I'd still do my own research before buying something, but I think the ad would bias me slightly.

And it's clearly tied to how much I like the people. On Corridor, I don't care about what Jake wants to sell me. But Wren is just so cute when he's getting all enthusiastic about his favorite audiobooks.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
There are some creators whom I trust to not do an add for something unless they genuinely use it and like it themselves. As in, they like it enough that they will continue to use it, over and above other options, even after they've been paid and could stop using it if they wanted to.

And in the case of those creators, seeing them promote something can be persuasive because it's like, "I now know one person whose taste I trust who has had a thoroughly positive experience with [thing]. Meanwhile I know zero people who have had thoroughly positive experiences with [other options in the same field]. One is 100% more than zero, and therefore [thing] now stands out in my mind as a possibly good option."

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
man, they're still being paid for it. even if they like it, you think their enjoyment isn't influenced by the fact that they get a lot of money? you don't know those people. this is exactly the reason why people disclose even if it's not a direct sponsorship and just free stuff - it's not an unbiased relationship to the product

if they're so trustworthy look at their unsponsored reviews and decide from there (of course even then youtubers love to lie, the internet is great)

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, man, I don't trust the people who ring up my groceries. I mean, they are getting paid to do it :/

I get this. I would only consider buying what the person I like is selling if it actually sounded appealing to me. And I would still do further research, not just take their word for it.

I’ll still watch the ad and paid promotion part of comedy YouTuber’s videos, because they usually find a way to make it funny and worth sitting through. But I’m not any more automatically inclined to buy the product, or use the service.

You just can’t trust the words of someone getting paid to promote something completely, no matter how likeable or trustworthy they seem otherwise. It’s a hustle I can respect though, I especially want less popular YouTubers to get enough money to survive. Especially because YouTube as a job isn’t going to provide that money sustainably on it’s own for everyone. So I’ll listen to the promotion, but that’s as far as I’ll go.

It is cool when the thing they’re promoting is something I already use and like. It rarely happens that way, but it feels nice to hear them talk something up and be able vouch that they’re right about the product being great.

lmao when we lived abroad my dad LOVED that the toilets came standard with bidets

I was trying to remember where the fuck I saw an add for bidet attachments so I could get him one for christmas, THANK YOU

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I lived in a bidet country for a couple of years and then went back to my non-bidet country and I have never felt that clean again except after an actual shower.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not getting paid for this (Pinky Swear!) and I highly recommend these products. They can be a life saver.

not the point of the secret, but...

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
bidets *are* more hygenic, though.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I can't imagine using a bidet. Especially during that time. No way would it get all the blood off.

Re: not the point of the secret, but...

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
well nobody said you couldn't *also* use toilet paper afterwards.

possible TMI re: periods

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Assuming we're talking periods, the best combination for me is bidet + menstrual cup. It's a pretty good position for inserting and removing the cup, without the danger of accidentally dropping it in the toilet. You can wash the cup in the bidet at the same time as you wash yourself, then put the cup back in, and wash off any extra blood.

The bidet definitely gets all the blood off pretty easily. But it might be a little messier if you use pads.

Bidets confuse me. Because just spraying water around on your body (especially your arse) isn't going to get it *clean*. You need soap. And you need a washcloth or *something* to move the soap around, and then you rinse, and then you need to *dry off*. So do bidets also come with a rack of washcloths and towels? Or do you drip-dry? Or....what?

It all just seems like a lot to fool with every time you use the toilet.

Re: not the point of the secret, but...

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
The attachment ones basically just spray water on your behind and reduce the need for too much toilet paper.

The built-in bidets that are stand-alone are more like an undercarriage sink.

The point is to help the process along and make it so you don't need to use so much toilet paper.

are you putting soap on your tp like what's the logic here that you think it's more hygienic to wipe with a dry piece of paper

They are, but as someone who was fortunate enough to use a full separate appliance bidet while in Europe, i have reservations about using a built in. When people use my bathroom, they USE my bathroom. Whatever is coming out will undoubtedly get particles wherever.

I mean at this point,in my non bidet country, i just use what I've always used which is a cup (and soap and water) to clean myself with.
