I'm not familiar with this show, why is it considered bad?

Extremely preachy, moralistic, patronizing, and predictable. Also, the actor playing the dad turned out to be a sexual abuser

...wasn't the dad a preacher or minister or something though? Of course it would be preachy.

That's not nearly as logical as you seem to think.

Just because a show is about a preacher doesn't mean it has to be preachy

And even if it was preachy on purpose, people would still probably dislike that

+ 1 to you and the anon above you.

It was supposed to be a soap opera type show for general audiences, not some Christian show. A large part of America is made up of Christians, sure. But that doesn’t mean everyone in the audience would enjoy being talked down to and preached at by a holier than thou character.

It was to the show’s detriment to be as preachy as it was, because it’s not logical or expected for a general audience show to be this way just because a main character is a member of the church. A show can have the main character be a painter, but nobody expects or wants that show to be mostly drawn-out diatribes about the proper canvas for oil painting.

run of the mill "good family feels" christian TV show from the 90s/00s with plotlines like "Ruthie ruins her cookies for the bake sale but befriends an elderly Holocaust survivor~" it wasn't the worst show in the world but it was shit

Christian propaganda, including I think a miracle baby born on Christmas at one point.
