I'm not familiar with this show, why is it considered bad?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-04 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Extremely preachy, moralistic, patronizing, and predictable. Also, the actor playing the dad turned out to be a sexual abuser

(Anonymous) 2021-10-04 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
...wasn't the dad a preacher or minister or something though? Of course it would be preachy.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's not nearly as logical as you seem to think.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Just because a show is about a preacher doesn't mean it has to be preachy

And even if it was preachy on purpose, people would still probably dislike that

run of the mill "good family feels" christian TV show from the 90s/00s with plotlines like "Ruthie ruins her cookies for the bake sale but befriends an elderly Holocaust survivor~" it wasn't the worst show in the world but it was shit

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Christian propaganda, including I think a miracle baby born on Christmas at one point.

lmao this is exactly how I feel about Touched By An Angel. I loved that show dearly but I won't touch it with a ten-foot-pole these days. I do take comfort from my memories of it though. I always found it a very soothing show, despite not being religious myself.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
This. I used to watch that show uh... religiously... despite being agnostic.

And this is how I feel about both of them. I am religious, but not in the way I was growing up. My parents were pretty restrictive with what tv we could watch, and plus it was hard to get much English tv in the Philippines. These two were some of the few shows shown in English that I was allowed to watch. Now, though, Seventh Heaven makes me feel gross due to the actor but also just isn't at all good or even a remotely good exploration of the issues it showed only a surface understanding of. And Touched by An Angel was just too saccharine and dealing with more serious, tragic, horrible things that are a part of life.

It's funny — whenever I see your posts in here, I wonder if the "phil" in your name has any relationship to the Philippines. :') I still don't know that it does, but heeeeey! Fellow Pinoy (?), woohoo

Did they ever have the episode where they found out that Ruthie was the mailman's kid and that's why she looks like absolutely no one else in her white bread family?

LOL

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
She looked more like them when she was older! More like Jessica Biel, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Aw man, I used to love this show. Every episode was A Very Special Episode, everything was over acted and super melodramatic, and everything was so contrived and forced. It was funny for all the wrong reasons.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, this show was like -- the show you watched if your parents thought "Full House" was too edgy.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao i am rolling howwww

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I totally forgot there was a whole other sister between Ruthie and Jessica Biel.

Barry Watson
Jessica Biel
David Gallagher
Ruthie.
Lol

I never really watched this show though so :/ touched by an angel & diagnosis murder were my shows. WB Saturday night shows/Sunday morning was my shit undoubtedly. This not so much.

her name was lucy, which always bothered me because all of the other kids had biblical names and then there's 'lucy' whose closest biblical association is well...

the actress is beverly something but my brain is giving me beverly cleary and I don't want to cheat by googling lol

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

You just jogged my memory! Beverly Mitchell I believe it is!

And damn! I hadn't noticed the biblical names lol

to me, it's not that it's bad, it's that it's so weird. like the first episode is the two older siblings getting caught by the dad almost kissing and they have to explain that it's not what it looks like (it is though, it's just that apparently the sister wants to learn how to kiss and so she asks her brother), and like why write that!!!! why! incest is much worse than being a bad kisser!

it's written like someone who either believes that the social consequences of christianity are completely innocuous or someone who knows they're not but also knows they can get a huge evangelical audience who will never know they're being made fun of.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-05 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I never saw that first episode, wow wtf!!

Oh my god, what the fuck? That's. I. Wow.

That just feels like the writer was indulging their incest kink under the flimsy guise of a "teachable moment."

tbf, it never quite gets to those levels again, although the family is always very enmeshed. the closest it get after that is ruthie dancing to ~hip hop in what i think is meant to be a provocative nature, which her dad walks in on, and the editing makes that scene WAY WEIRDER than it needed to be.
