Honestly, I've done this before, but with a game I hadn't played at the time. The writer was a friend and I knew their writing skills were good. The game was Kingdom Hearts, and within the next few months, I had played and beaten the first two games. So you could say reading fic for unfamiliar fandoms might get you into the fandom.

I've also received comments on multiple fics where the reader expressed interest in a game or a show because of what I wrote.

But folks who just read fic and never get into the fandom? Well, not sure about that, but it's not hurting anyone either, so...
