Usually it's because the show is dumb but the characters are hot and it's popular in fandom so there's lots of good romance and smut

I can just google what the characters look like, I don't need to know the details

(Anonymous) 2021-10-06 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao precisely

Although sometimes the show isn't dumb, I'm just lazy/don't have time to dedicate to it. But with a quick wiki and few YouTube clips, you've got all the background & characterization you need.

I don't get it either, I need to have the emotional attachment to the characters to want to search out fic otherwise they're just blank cardboard cut-outs with nothing that entices me to dig deeper. Even smut doesn't work for me unless I know the characters, the emotional investment is key to my enjoyment of fic.

I don't judge people if they do this to be clear, I just find it confusing.

I discovered my latest obsession and new favorite show from reading fic of it! I was reading Prodigal Son fic because I liked the show and I love LDP and found a good whump story of his character and was like 'I wonder if the author has written more of this?'. She hadn't, but I was intrigued by the summary of a fic from Longmire and decided to read it and Googled the characters and was like 'wait that's LDP!' and read the story and loved it and decided to watch the show and fell in love with it and the characters.

Additionally, I have friends who aren't in certain fandoms who read my stories from them. I've convinced at least one friend to watch the source material because she liked the fic concepts and characters enough (hilariously it is the same author that got me to watch Longmire). Another won't touch the show but they'll read the fic because it's 'hot' and they just Google who everyone is and assume I know what I'm doing lol.

That being said, I'm being talked into watching two different shows so I can write fic about the characters because I CAN'T do that (and there's no fic in these small fandoms yet/anymore anyway).

There are times I can, when the author goes to the trouble to actually introduce the setting and characters instead of just dropping the reader into the middle of things and assuming they already know who or what all the names mean and how the politics/magic/relationships work.

I mean I have friends that have never played my favorite game, but they read my fic for it, and I assume it works out for them because the first story in the series pretty much is one of the canon characters being introduced to all the weird stuff that makes Valendia different from just "faux-medieval-France", so they learn the characters and setting along with this character as he begins his pre-canon adventures (and meets his ride-or-die XD). And I've read some long chaptered AUs for fandoms I don't know because well, they're creating a different version of the story and characters so it doesn't matter that I don't know the canon version. It basically reads like original fic.

But I mean... that kind of takes effort and a lot of words. So if you're talking about quick and easy reads in a fandom where you're unfamiliar with canon, I can't do that either. But hey, whatever floats someone else's boat.

Honestly, I've done this before, but with a game I hadn't played at the time. The writer was a friend and I knew their writing skills were good. The game was Kingdom Hearts, and within the next few months, I had played and beaten the first two games. So you could say reading fic for unfamiliar fandoms might get you into the fandom.

I've also received comments on multiple fics where the reader expressed interest in a game or a show because of what I wrote.

But folks who just read fic and never get into the fandom? Well, not sure about that, but it's not hurting anyone either, so...

I can do this for smut fics of the kinky pwp kind (I actually specifically look for fandoms I'm not familiar with when it comes to some kinks cause I can't or don't want to imagine my ships in these situations) but fics with plot? Nope. Does not compute.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-06 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
oh yeah same - if I'm searching for monsterfucking or tentacles or something equally out there, I do not give a single fuck about the characters, I just want good writing and not a bunch of hentai ahegao nonsense. I still filter out fandoms I absolutely loathe, but I'd much rather enjoy my kinky pwp with characters I have no investment into.

Same here, nonny.

Game of Thrones is a veritable fruitcake of a series and I don't think I would attempt doing that, kudos for the effort!

I mostly don't consume video content (thx, ADHD & video motion sickness!) so I do a lot of reading in canons I haven't watched. I need a good intro to the characters and dynamics. Sometimes I can pick it up from a fic or two, the kind that has enough work gone into it that it seems like the author should file off the serial numbers and get herself some sweet sweet cash but so much depends on the original fandom that it might not be possible to completely remove all traces. Sometimes one of my friends gives me a primer and throws me in the deep end (SGA).

Shows which make bad decisions and should feel bad about themselves where fanon takes a hard left turn at Albuquerque are the best to read without context of the show.

If you can’t watch videos, have you tried looking up transcripts? That’s how I got into FIM.

Echoing some of the other anons here.

Sometimes (on FS!) I run into a character design I love, and just run with it. Google some images. Listen to a few clips on YouTube for characterization and the sound of their voice, quick wiki for some background/general traits and we're off to the races. Frankly, sometimes I know I'm just getting the fanon version and I really don't mind. I build the connection via fic. And then I love them all the more if and when I engage with the source material.

For example, I got into Overwatch because of a secret here. I started reading fic -- all I needed was some images of the character in question and I was off. Characterization across all the fics was super similar, so I kinda knew the way the character really was. The only thing that took me by surprise when I actually engaged with the game was the fact that in so many fics they had Reyes either speaking occasionally in Spanglish and using terms of endearment in Spanish, and in all the voice clips NOT ONCE did the man use Spanish. Part of me side eyed the fics...like are you indulging in some Latin Lover fetish thing or is this an individual who just wants their fave to speak like they do at home/with friends? I understand the latter, but the former makes me feel uncomfortable.

Anyway, totally doable, but I get that not a lot of people are into it.

I don't understand why this bothers? Back in the FFML days hardly anyone had seen the shows being ficced, you just took what was great in fandom and fanon and ran with it. It worked.

I started reading some dark fic because a friend wanted some input and it was too dark for most people, but she knew dark was right up my alley... and while knowing the canon would have enhanced the experience, I'm sure, I did actually enjoy reading her stories. I didn't NEED to know the characters. Kind of like reading a novel, right? You don't have to know stuff going into it. Assuming you get enough context or relevant backstory to understand what's going on, of course.

I've also had someone tell me that they love my fic even though they weren't familiar with the canon (nor did they care to be). No idea why they started reading it in the first place!

(Anonymous) 2021-10-06 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who does this quite frequently, it's usually because the fic itself has certain tropes/scenarios that I'll read regardless of watching the show. If it's very confusing, then a casual 5 min of googling/wiki usually clears things up pretty quick.

Either that or its a fic from a writer that I liked or a bookmark. It's pretty fun to find random stuff you would have never tried before and it's gotten me into fandoms that are outside my norm.

Don’t know if it’s the same thing, but there’ve been a few times that I read several fics before I was finally interested enough to watch the show.

OP, all I can say is that I'm impressed at how all the characters in your image seem to watching the TV.

for me it's one of three things: my friends have written incredible meta so I can read any authors fic because I do sorta know the characters, it's a property that embedded into popular nerd consciousness (and isn't really firm on continuity anyway lmao) like batman or star wars or lastly the person is an incredible writer and I can read anything from them.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-06 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
I won't watch SPN, not my cup of tea, but whenever I'm craving a specific weird kink I can't find in my usual fandoms I'll go look over there. Who cares if I have only have partial, second-hand knowledge of the characters and they might as well be OOC? I'm just here for id-fic.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-06 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
I usually don’t have this problem for some reason, until I tried to read Genshin Impact fic based on thinking a pairing looks aesthetically pleasing.

I ended up having to do a brief amount of research into the characters in question just to be able to follow anything.

I still don’t know anything about the other characters, or much about the overall plot. And I don’t think the game seems like my kind of thing, so I guess that won’t change.

There are times when I've been looking for a specific trope or element and a fandom I've never heard of has the most examples. I'm tempted to look that fandom up on wikipedia and dive in. I haven't had the motivation just yet, but the temptation is there.
