I started reading some dark fic because a friend wanted some input and it was too dark for most people, but she knew dark was right up my alley... and while knowing the canon would have enhanced the experience, I'm sure, I did actually enjoy reading her stories. I didn't NEED to know the characters. Kind of like reading a novel, right? You don't have to know stuff going into it. Assuming you get enough context or relevant backstory to understand what's going on, of course.

I've also had someone tell me that they love my fic even though they weren't familiar with the canon (nor did they care to be). No idea why they started reading it in the first place!
