Echoing some of the other anons here.

Sometimes (on FS!) I run into a character design I love, and just run with it. Google some images. Listen to a few clips on YouTube for characterization and the sound of their voice, quick wiki for some background/general traits and we're off to the races. Frankly, sometimes I know I'm just getting the fanon version and I really don't mind. I build the connection via fic. And then I love them all the more if and when I engage with the source material.

For example, I got into Overwatch because of a secret here. I started reading fic -- all I needed was some images of the character in question and I was off. Characterization across all the fics was super similar, so I kinda knew the way the character really was. The only thing that took me by surprise when I actually engaged with the game was the fact that in so many fics they had Reyes either speaking occasionally in Spanglish and using terms of endearment in Spanish, and in all the voice clips NOT ONCE did the man use Spanish. Part of me side eyed the fics...like are you indulging in some Latin Lover fetish thing or is this an individual who just wants their fave to speak like they do at home/with friends? I understand the latter, but the former makes me feel uncomfortable.

Anyway, totally doable, but I get that not a lot of people are into it.
