for me it's one of three things: my friends have written incredible meta so I can read any authors fic because I do sorta know the characters, it's a property that embedded into popular nerd consciousness (and isn't really firm on continuity anyway lmao) like batman or star wars or lastly the person is an incredible writer and I can read anything from them.
