Personally I would take it as the highest compliment and be deeply delighted to know my writing had been that hot to someone.

However, I think you're better off assuming it will make the writer uncomfortable, because it probably will make a lot of writers uncomfortable and you just never know who will feel deeply validated by it and who will be uncomfortable.

Unless you know the person well and you're friends and you know they'll be cool with it, in which case I say go for it!

agreed here. I disagree with anon below you that no author wants to hear it - as an author, I am absolutely fine hearing it. But these days you have NO idea what the author's attitude is toward such feedback and it's safer not to risk a screeching HOW DARE YOU blocked blocked blocked.

I do assume that when I write smut that gets a "that's hot" here and there is one people somewhere are probably getting off to, and that's enough ego boost for me. plausible deniability goes both ways I guess.

Also agreeing. I don't exactly WANT to hear it, but I also wouldn't be horrified if someone left a review like that.

But then I have zero interest in sex aside from mild intellectual curiosity, and what other people are into is so far removed from me that I don't take it personally. I mean, I know a couple friends who have admitted to leather/foot fetishes - and when I post cosplay that involves leather or "unique" footwear, I know who's going to give me a "like". XD I just find it amusing, and they're not asking anything from me that I'm not doing for myself.

But on the other hand, I know plenty of cosplayer friends who are creeped out beyond belief to discover that someone, somewhere, has used their pics as fetish fodder. So I'm assuming that many fanfic writers feel the same way and it's just... not a good idea to say so unless you know the author will only be amused or flattered.

That's totally different though. A cosplayer pic is a picture of that person. So yeah, it's super creepy to hear about a stranger getting off to it.

A fic is an item of craft that somebody made, that is not necessarily about the author at all. It's about the work. And it's erotic fiction, so presumably, turning readers on is the intent. It's not at all like someone saying they get off thinking about me. The story is about the characters, not the author.

It's clear that everybody has their own perception of this issue, but personally, yes, this is exactly how I see it!

I tend to agree, but I do know some people who take their fanfic very, very personal, like "it's an extension of my soul!"

(But indeed, if that "extension of your soul" is erotica and you put it out in public, uh...)

At any rate. The cosplay comparison was just an example of "what is not offensive to one person may be offensive to another", and I can't imagine (well, okay, I probably could if I tried... maybe...) a scenario where it is a better idea to leave a review that says "I jerked off to this" than it is to leave a review that just says "This is super hot".
