Tbh general etiquette applies: make it about the fic, and not about you.

"That was so hot, this or that scene was so sexy, character was so sexy in this, etc." = mostly about the fic, and fine. "Let me describe in detail what effects this had upon my genitalia, and what I did to myself in response" = mostly about you, not necessarily welcome, TMI

+1

No need to describe in explicit detail what the fic did for you.

"Hot damn! That was really well written" or "that moment in the scene when they both... perfection!" Things like that, especially if it's something you really like to see and maybe don't see in other places. Just commending the author on their skill and the fact that you found certain moments particularly hot and well written I think are enough. Like...we all know if you cared enough to comment, it probably got you where you wanted to be. We don't need signed proof lol.

Maybe finding a forum or something where it is expected or desired to talk about that kind of thing and make a thread for it recommending the author's work? If you're really set on sharing that level of detail (which I get wanting to share your excitement [insert hey!allyoupeople.gif], if it's really good but at the same time...beyond stating that something got you hot & bothered or that something really worked for you, is it necessary to divulge all that to the author?). That level of commentary might be beyond what the author might like. Read the other comments. See the direction and if there's any interaction from the author. General safety guidance when commenting: the author just needs to know that you liked and appreciated their work. Tell them it made you happy (if it did). For smutty works, they know you probably got off. They don't need confirmation.

This. At most, sometimes I might joke and say something like, "*Dumps bucket of cold water on self*".

But yeah, I'd personally feel really weird getting THAT personal with a writer, and it'd be a bit jarring to receive a comment like that in turn.

That said, I do agree with the posters who say that if the reader and author know each other well enough to where they'd feel comfortable making those kinds of comments to each other, I mean, that's their call, whatever works for them.

There's always the classic "I'll be in my bunk"? ;)

(Anonymous) 2021-10-10 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I always did love that. But I'm old and nothing is TMI for me anymore.

Bad. no one wants to hear that.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-10 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the platform imo( and the detail into which you go in your comment lol)
Like, if it were on a kink-meme were the whole point is to write potential fap material that other people requested I'd say it's fair game because that's kinda the point of it all, in a way.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-10 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems to me that telling someone that basically amounts to sexting

So, only share it if it's someone you have that relationship with

Personally I would take it as the highest compliment and be deeply delighted to know my writing had been that hot to someone.

However, I think you're better off assuming it will make the writer uncomfortable, because it probably will make a lot of writers uncomfortable and you just never know who will feel deeply validated by it and who will be uncomfortable.

Unless you know the person well and you're friends and you know they'll be cool with it, in which case I say go for it!

No fic writer wants to hear that, and the people who read comments don't want to hear that either. It's like the fandom version of sexual harassment in a way. Which might sound a bit extreme sure, but in a way you are placing a person into a sexual interaction with you without their consent when you say something like that. Would you say it to someone offline? To a coworker? To a friend? To a stranger on the street? In public? No? Don't say it to a fic writer either.

I don't want to hear explicit details, but I always appreciate appreciation. If I wrote a sad story and it made you cry, or I wrote a funny story and it made you laugh, that's good, it means I succeeded at what I set out to do. Smut is no different.

Really don't want explicit details though.

I remember this one author's note I read for a story that "I came three times while writing this chapter." I think it was a bit much, but hey at least that was the author themselves saying that, and not a random stranger.

Eh, I'd say it depends on the forum. AO3? Well, how well do you know the author? What's the fandom like? And even then, on AO3 I think the above-mentioned "I'll be in my bunk" is more than enough information.

I disagree with the person who said NO fan writers like to hear that people have gotten off to their smut--hi, smut writers do this for a reason, and some forums like kink memes are practically built around the expectation that some of the fic is going to get a reader off--but I do think that how graphically you tell someone is going to be more of an issue. If I write porn and some gives me the "I'll be in my bunk" line, I'll be flattered & I will understand everything I need to. If they get into distinct detail that I don't want or need, I'd be uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-10 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Things like 'I found this hot' would be fine, or even the fire emoji's I've gotten sometimes, but anything explicit or detailed about how hot someone found it? Yeah I delete those comments because they make me uncomfortable. Obviously writing smut is meant to illicit a reaction but I really don't want to know the specifics, I can infer that it did something in some manner, like unless I'm close with someone I am not comfortable with intimate details(and even then there's limits).

(Anonymous) 2021-10-10 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I imagining it, or was there a time when people would say "UNF" or "I'll be in my bunk" to signify appreciation of smuttier fics?

Either way, no, please do not tell them! It crosses the line into TMI.

I mean... what's your goal, to compliment the author, or to share titillating details about your fap session? Because it's super easy to accomplish the first without also doing the second.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-10 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely OT but I will never not roll my eyes at people going "lol, this food item looks like genitals".

(Anonymous) 2021-10-10 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Strangely I wouldn't mind if someone said it on my NSFW fanart but I feel like... Writing is so much more personal in most cases that it's more embarrassing...? I don't write NSFW fic though so that's just my two cents.

Different strokes, and all that.

...pun intended?

I personally wouldn't mind one bit if a reader told me they fapped to my smut. The closest I've ever gotten to receiving such a comment was "I've never been so wet in my entire life" -- no doubt an exaggeration, but I mean, how can I not take that as a compliment? Esp. when I'm not so great at writing hot sex scenes (I go more for awkward or funny).

But yeah, as others have said, better to stick to the "that was hot!" type remarks if you're not certain. Do people still say "I'll be in my bunk"? Would love to see that make a comeback.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-10 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Just let it all hang out, OP, the pervs that write that stuff are the sort of people who'll get off on your descriptions of getting off.

As a smut writer I like seeing comments like that. I've never gotten a lengthy TMI one. But I also like less personal positive comments just fine.

As a smut reader I have been known to comment with "Unf" and equivalents.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-11 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Please don't. I write smut because I want to imagine the characters getting each other off, not because I want to get readers off and then hear about it. Ugh. As others have said, if you must comment, make it about the fic, not you.

The worst I ever got was someone making a comment along those lines while using a userpic of their own toddler. *shudder*
