Thanks for the sympathy.

It's not the end of the world. Get over it. Thousands of people live perfectly normal lives with blindness. Suck it up.

Re: 171.

Way to be an insensitive twat. Or just a troll. I hope just a troll.

Re: 171.

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I'm a real live human being with a BLIND friend. You guys are the insensitive twats, acting like blindness is some sort of dehumanizing deathlike event. You're all fucking ridiculous.

Okay, I've had enough.

I'm the secret maker. You're full of shit to tell me how to feel about this fear, rational or not. So you have a blind friend. I'm glad they are able to live their lives and I don't blame them for being pissed about being treated like they're made of glass.

But I am not them. I was born with sight, and am studying for a career that relies heavily on sight, and I don't know the resources. I wouldn't know where to start, and it would take a tremendous amount of time and money to readjust my entire life and mental processes to this kind of handicap.

I understand your side, but your attitude is shit.

Re: 171.

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh hey, I have a blind friend. She is blind. She's obviously never had sight before! Let's just make stupid assumptions and dig ourselves deeper.

WRONG! She was born sighted. She was also born with glaucoma and spent a very long time dealing with her blindness. She was in denial up until college. And despite knowing one day that she'd be totally blind, she took elementary education to be a teacher. Then she went off to the center for the blind and came back a new person. She was more confident and outgoing and accepting of her condition. She's jumped into the National Federation of the Blind, going to conventions all over the country, holding positions, lobbying in Congress, going on mission trips to third world countries. All this she did with a set of bum eyes.

Obviously, your attitudes are all wrong in the matter, but it's your life. Whatever. Stop trying to drum up sympathy. I know far too many really awesome blind people to feel like coddling someone so full of prejudice and self-pity.

I understand your side, but your attitude ain't all sunshine and kittens either.

Re: 171.

[personal profile] sammywhatammy 2009-03-03 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I never made the assumption that she was born blind. Way to go.
I do say she's a credit to the human race and is a stronger person than I would be in her situation.

I never had any intention of "drumming up sympathy." I made the secret because it was a genuine secret fear I hadn't told anyone about and wanted to get it out. SURPRISE! Actually using the comm what it was meant for!

I'm not a lesser person because I'm afraid to go blind.

I'm glad for you friend. I really am. It's a good thing she's not letting blindness let her down.

I find myself wondering, though, what did you say to her when she find out that she was going blind? Did you tell her to suck it up, it's not the end of the world? How did she react?

Re: 171.

[identity profile] sashwizzled.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
... Oh, shut up. You're being an asshole, no two ways about it. Becoming blind is a terrifying thing to anybody who was born with sight - your friend was probably scared as fuck before she learned to deal with it, as would most people. Good for you, not being scared of the prospect. But the idea of not being able to see terrifies the shit out of me, not because it's ~*~dehumanising and deathlike~*~, but because I kind of like being able to see.

Shut up, off your high horse, sit the fuck down.

Re: 171.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-03 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
So you have a blind friend. That's nice. I really hope you weren't this much of an ass to her when she went blind.

Seems to me that someone who knows a blind person should be one of the first to realize that it can be a traumatic experience, but that might be me overestimating people again.

Re: 171.

[identity profile] phoenixothon.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
If you want to talk about ridiculous assumptions, you should include the one you are currently making about how it would be to go blind.
Unless it happens directly to you, you have no idea, and any doctor or psychologist will tell you it is different for everyone.

From your info page:

"If the internet is a playground, this is the trench coat and fedora I wear when sneaking up on unsuspecting kids.

"Hey! Wanna look inside my coat?"

F.A.Q.
Yes, I'm legal. Yes, I'm house trained. Yes, my dog is smarter than you. Any other questions?"

Wow you are a class act.
Why don't you go pick on something worth while like pedos.

I'd be willing to bet your "real" LJ is in this thread acting sympathetic.

I see what you're trying to do here, but you're still being a dick. Blindness isn't a dehumanizing deathlike experience, but "I am going blind" is a perfectly reasonable fear.

(frozen comment) Re: 171.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-02 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not the end of the world, but can you seriously not understand how losing your sight would be a terrifying thing to go through? Just because it's possible to live a normal life doesn't mean that you have to be such a douchebag.

Re: 171.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-02 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So, how would you react if you were the one in risk of becoming blind? "Oh, I don't mind, after all, it's not as if I'm about to die"? Is that what you would think?

If so, I applaud you for your consistency. If not, then you're a fucking asshole.

No, it's not the end of the world. But it's not exactly very fun, either.

Re: 171.

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's exactly how I'd react. I'm sure I'd be depressed as hell, but the bright side is that I wouldn't die! The bright side is that I know where to go to get help. I know the right people to turn to to deal with it. To pretend that it's the end of life is insulting to all the people that already live with blindness.

Re: 171.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing here you're missing? NOBODY HERE IS CLAIMING BLINDNESS IS THE END OF LIFE. Seriously, we're not. It's not like dying, but it's still not sunshine and flowers.

You said it yourself: you'd be depressed as hell. Do you seriously think that someone who might be going blind does not deserve a little bit of sympathy?

Re: 171.

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You are all treating it like it's the end of the road, like I should pity someone and feel sorry for them and offer them my deepest sympathies. No.

Offering sympathies in such a case is completely useless. It's not giving anyone their sight back.

I was completely realistic in my original reply. Should they go blind they'll head off to a center, learn to keep trucking and get on with life. The end.

Re: 171.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-02 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Offering sympathies in such a case is completely useless.

No, it's not. It's really, really not.

Of course it's not going to give anyone their sight back. It might however, make them feel slightly better. Sometimes, even something useless like "I'm sorry for your situation" from a stranger on the internet can make someone smile, as silly as that sounds. How do you think that telling the OP, "shut up, it's not the end of the world" is going to make him/her feel?

I understand what you're saying. I've known blind people, too, and I'm perfectly aware that they're far from helpless. But you're coming off as a callous douche. There's a big difference between sympathy and pity. One is more welcome than the other.

Re: 171.

[identity profile] 1strangepirate.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
What is the end of the world, then? All you've compared it to so far is death.

also lol keep in mind that I'm not raging at you over this or anything

I'm just trying to understand your point of view here m'friend
