171. What if you go blind? Then you go blind. You won't die. You'll go off to a center for blindness education and learn to read braille, use JAWS for your computer, travel with a cane, cook, live, etc. Blindness is not the end of the world.

Okay, I've had enough.

I'm the secret maker. You're full of shit to tell me how to feel about this fear, rational or not. So you have a blind friend. I'm glad they are able to live their lives and I don't blame them for being pissed about being treated like they're made of glass.

But I am not them. I was born with sight, and am studying for a career that relies heavily on sight, and I don't know the resources. I wouldn't know where to start, and it would take a tremendous amount of time and money to readjust my entire life and mental processes to this kind of handicap.

I understand your side, but your attitude is shit.

Yes, that's exactly how I'd react. I'm sure I'd be depressed as hell, but the bright side is that I wouldn't die! The bright side is that I know where to go to get help. I know the right people to turn to to deal with it. To pretend that it's the end of life is insulting to all the people that already live with blindness.

The thing here you're missing? NOBODY HERE IS CLAIMING BLINDNESS IS THE END OF LIFE. Seriously, we're not. It's not like dying, but it's still not sunshine and flowers.

You said it yourself: you'd be depressed as hell. Do you seriously think that someone who might be going blind does not deserve a little bit of sympathy?

I have always found that, blindness, short of mental illness, death, or paralysis, has always pretty much been the thing I am most afraid of

I have 20/20 vision in both eyes and 20/25 when they're seperate, but it's still been one of those things that has scared me my whole life

just the concept scares me to no end; I love to talk to friends and loved ones and see their faces, draw, read (without braille, now), watch films, watch my favorite shows with others, play video games, walk in the country and admire the scenery, and admire the beauty of nature in general; if I lost my sight, I wouldn't be able to do any of that

I'm fairly cynical and am used to people being jerks on the innernet, but for you to be so callous to someone who faces a serious, horrible handicap just seems so heartless

Call me a jerk, but you're an insulting asshole. To say that blindness is some sort of debilitating handicap is a load of bullshit. With the exception of the actual sight part, they do all of those things you've listed. Believe it or not, blind people do actually enjoy films and television and walking in the country, admiring nature. What a load of bullshit to imply that they can't. Obviously, you don't know any actual blind people, you're just another idiot on the web full of fear and prejudice.

Horrible handicap my ass. If I treated my friends like they were some sort of pitiable lepers they'd beat my ass within an inch of my life and I'd fucking deserve it.

It may not be the end of the world, but it can still be a traumatizing experience for someone who's used to having sight.

I wouldn't be able to do any of the things listed without sight and still retain the same level of enjoyment. I don't know what you mean by fear and prejudice. Fear of being blind? Yes! Yes, I am afraid of going blind! Why? Drawing is my favorite hobby and I'm going to pursue a career in film editing. I love looking at paintings and have prints and posters all over my walls. I've always been a very visual person and I love looking at color and movement and the like. I enjoy nature by looking out over fields or at trees in autumn or out over the ocean or at any of the weird insects we get out here. I love it. Hearing and having a tactile sensation of my world is still important, but my perceptions of everything minus sight would be drastically different.

If I wanted to be an athlete, I wouldn't want to be paralyzed. If I were a musician, I'd have a fear of going deaf. I'm not afraid of blind people, I don't hate blind people, and I don't think that blind people are pitiful or subhuman. I just thing that blindness itself is awful and not something you can just immedeately get over or that the loss of sight isn't a scary thing to go through.

I don't know any blind people, but I do know know paraplegic, deaf, and mentally handicapped people. They can still smile and laugh and enjoy life, and they can still lead happy and productive lives. I still have a deep respect for them and love them for who they are. I understand that they're people and I don't act in a patronizing manner or act like they're less of a person for what's happened to them or how they were born.

That doesn't change the fact that they are handicapped. It's ridiculous to assert that blind people or any of the other aforementioned people live precisely the same life as someone who is able to function to a fuller extent of human capability. They're going to face more risks and difficulties than I as I am now will never have to confront. I admire people who still succeed despite those difficulties, but I'm not going to insult someone who doesn't want to have to face them.

If you're asserting that just because I took a point opposite yours when you told someone afraid of losing their sight to suck it up and consider being blind something that is difficult to go through that I have nothing but pity for the blind or that I am prejudiced against them (what?) then you're missing what I said entirely.

tl;dr saying that you're a jerk for telling someone to stop bitching about going blind doesn't mean I think blind people are gimpy little lepers
