I don't like genderswapped fics because nine times out of ten it's 1) done to turn a popular fanon queer pairing straight, or 2) a case of "this character now has boobs" and there's absolutely nothing different plot- or character-wise.

If you're going to genderswap a character, I want to read about how things would be different if that character were the opposite sex. I want to read about how the story would change, how their relationships would change, how their mindset would be different. If nothing changes at all, then what's the point?

For instance, in one of my fandoms, a large part of the plot has to do with a specific character being next in line for the throne. Genderswap that character into a woman and they wouldn't be next in line for the throne, which means an entire segment of the plot wouldn't happen the same way that it does in canon. That's interesting! I want to read stuff like that! But if it's just "[X] is female but nothing about the plot changes whatsoever," then who cares?

An anon from above, but yeah, I like when genderswap is treated the way it should be. As a total AU where a lot of events of the characters' lives change, not due to their gender but because of how the outside world reacts to them now that they are this gender. It *should* be a full AU!

Exactly. That's the kind of thing I'd be interested in reading, but it's so rarely what genderswap actually ends up being in practice.

I dunno, so many gender swapped M->F fics take a fun male character and turn her into this angry, stomping, put-upon feminist; and I am, frankly, an angry, stomping, put-upon feminist myself, so that's not my issue so much as they don't resemble the cooler than fuck character they once were. They're just kind of an angry turd flipping off at chauvinists and everyone hoorays them. It's satisfying in an activist sense but not in any fan fictional sense. If you get my meaning.

But I 100% support anyone's choice to write these stories as I can see the cathartic beauty of it.

Very different does not necessarily have to mean "super worse" - that's again, lazy writers not exploring options other than the straightforward.

People seem to not get that unless the character is an angry stomping feminist in canon, the female version shouldn't be, either. Who says a dutiful knight would suddenly not be a dutiful knight that stays above all that because she's female now? Why would a character that started off as an arrogant jokester have to change? Because... women can't do that or something?

If anything, their demeanor is the one thing that *shouldn't* change because that's what keeps them recognizable. They should act the same. And have the same quirks. And at least, most of the same likes, dislikes, interests, etc. The interesting part is exploring their path to *getting* to what they are in canon, and that path is what should be demonstrated to have changed.

To use OP's example, female Tony Stark should still act p much exactly like male Tony Stark, and exploring how much of that is still the same issues and how she got there - because she must have got there, as she's Tony Stark, in spite of most of the canon counterpart's issues being very male-gendered - is the *fun* part smh

+1, this is the kind of genderswap I like (and have written!) Your assigned gender does affect your life and how other people interact with you, even if you're the same person exactly on the inside. There's very few canons where it won't have an effect.

Yeah, I'm sitting here thinking of another one of my canons where genderswapping a certain character would give you a female knight protecting a prince dynamic, which would actually be cool? And it would be interesting to see what sort of effect it would have because said knight already gets flak for being common-born instead of a noble, so how much worse would being female make it? Would people assume that she had angled for her position in the hopes of being able to marry the prince and thus achieve status for herself? That kind of thing. There's a lot you could explore with a genderswap and it's so disappointing that the vast majority of people don't.
