Packing sucks. Getting rid of stuff sucks. Loading sucks. Unloading sucks. Unpacking sucks.

And there is a not insignificant amount of time just standing and staring at all the stuff I have yet to pack.

I genuinely like most of my stuff, but it's times like these I wish I was much more of a minimalist (sometimes I have no trouble giving up things I don't use anymore or things I acquired at some point but never used, but sometimes it is wrenching).

Moving is the fucking worst, my sympathy

I read a psychology study once that stated that moving was up there with "death of a family member" in the "physically and emotionally stressful things that humans have to deal with" category, and I believe it.

It's enormously stressful - your home is going to be somewhere else, there's a huge amount of paperwork, it's hard work physically, and there's a deadline. Can feel my blood pressure rising just thinking about it.

I unfortunately have a fairly recent experience for comparison and yeah, maybe for the physical stress I would agree, but for me, the emotional stress of death was much worse (still kind of bad now, four months out). I mean, I'm frustrated and exhausted from trying to get everything done for the move, and maybe a little sad, but at some point I will be done with it and I will be in a new place and settled. It doesn't feel as clear for the loss.

Minimalist?

Paradox: I hate moving. I also really wish I could move because my neighbors suck rancid donkey balls.

Here's hoping they move instead - then you'd be free of them and they would have to deal with a move.

There’s a part of me that likes it because I enjoy the later event of unpacking and rearranging for a new room.

Same! I've actually liked moving all the times I've moved except for the time that I moved back into my parents' house after years of unemployment. :P But every other time there's been this sort of exciting sense of starting fresh in a new and better place. Making the new bare-bones place look like "my place" and figuring out just how the layout will work in rooms of different sizes...

I don't know if I'd feel that way if I had to move again now though, because unless I get another house of my own that is somehow better than the current house I have all to myself and can somehow afford, I can't move to "a better place".

Having moved quite a few times throughout my life, I feel you on this. It's a real pain in the ass, indeed.

Solidarity nonnie, it's a massive pain in the ass to keep track of so many things, big and small and knowing that if you don't sort them out nobody else will for you. I'm moving continents myself and the only thing making it easier for me is going all out in getting rid and giving away stuff no longer in use, but I understand how hard it is if all you own holds meaning to you. Godpseed and good luck!! It will be over soon.

I don't *enjoy* moving, but it is a great way to sort, clean, toss, donate, and in general organize all my 'stuff' and get rid of as much as I can part with.

And it's fun finding new places for old, loved things.

But in general, in the thick of it...yeah, it sucks.
