Your best Halloween costumes

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2021-10-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
What are the Halloween costumes you liked the most or were proudest of?

Or what costume ideas have you always wanted to try out, but haven’t yet?

Re: Your best Halloween costumes

My best costume was Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction. Black wig, tight black pants, white dress shirt, and a prop syringe that looked like it was sticking out of my chest.

It was low tech (just anchored to a piece of cardboard that was tucked into my bra) but I was so damn pleased with that.

Three very young kids dressed as Walt, Jesse, and Saul from Breaking Bad. A very impressive Darth Vader (dude was tall and big and had the breathing thing, it was cool af lol) with a toddler Kylo Ren. The homemade witch costume I had as a girl (I won Best Witch at my school's costume contest lol).

My s/o and I did Bill and Ted (of WYLD STALLYNS fame) one year - that was freaking hilarious. And surprisingly tough - I had to pin down all the little details like the print on Bill's button-down shirt, and what all the patches on Ted's shorts are... We went to a karaoke bar and sang "God Gave Rock and Roll To You" as a duet; my brother and a bunch of our friends were there too and I kept air-guitaring next to the stage while they were up, and they were dressed as like a pirate and a monk and such, so we got pictures with "historical figures". XD

That same year, while s/o was at work, I had nothing to do during the day and was impatient to get into a costume, so scrounged up a random "autumn wood nymph" costume from ren faire garb and cosplay pieces and floral garlands and such. It was such a success that a couple weeks later I recreated it and went out to a woodsy area with my photographer sis-in-law to take actual PRO photos of it, and THOSE came out so well I decided to do a version for all the seasons, swapping out colors and types of floral garlands, and matching colored streaks in the green wig. It went over pretty well at cons even, though it's an original design and basically closet cosplay.

Also fairly proud of my Morticia Addams, and mildly annoyed that a friend chickened out of being my Gomez that year. Still want to take that to karaoke if I can ever sing again, and do "Hell" by Squirrel Nut Zippers. :D

I've always adored Halloween, celebrating every year with decorations and buying lots of pumpkin and bat related goodies and ooooh I love haunted houses and masquerade-type parties, but I was never big on actually dressing up myself. I think it's in part because I've never been able to wear makeup of any kind due to my sensitive skin and I'm eird about wearing things on my head in general. IDK, it's almost like a claustrophobic feeling, if I had to describe it?

It'd be so cute to dress up as a satyr kind of thing though if I ever get over it. Krampus is forever cool so maybe it'd be more towards Christmas but yeah.

as a fulltime cosplayer and professional cosplay maker, I don't go all-in on Halloween. sometimes I barely go half-assed. full disclosure.

since we bought a house our Halloweens have been themed, regardless of whether we're hosting a party. We've done Addam's Family, Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters, Nightmare Before Christmas, and a few others, so if we're hosting a party I have to have a costume that goes with the theme. I managed to make my own checked shirt for Adam from Beetlejuice and it was right, but hardly anyone noticed. If I'm proud of anything, it's that I found the exact poncho Giles wore in one of the Buffy Halloween episodes for our Buffy theme, even if I didn't look at all like Giles. I needed the sombrero but couldn't get one in time. And the kids in our neighborhood don't know Buffy lmao.

we don't have a theme this year and it's almost too late to even decorate. we're not having a party. I just don't fuckin care anymore, I've blown my load on other people's costumes and don't have energy for my own now.

I had a FANTASTIC Crowley Good Omens once but the party I went to, absolutely no one else there had seen TV Omens. I got so many details, incorporated my snakeskin print boots and did the little 'tattoo' and so on and so forth...

My Tina Belcher was a success in part because we ate at a restaurant where the booths and walls were as such that I could get photos framed to look like I was in Bob's Burgers, even though the costume itself was pretty basic beyond the wig.

In high school I did a really good Dana Scully, had a little badge made up and a suit and someone who agreed to do Mulder.

One I really want to do but have never done (yet) is Eddie from RHPS.

My favorite costumes that I wore:

1) The fourth Doctor from "Doctor Who". I curled my brown hair with mousse, sculpted my features with an extremely mild amount of matte eyeshadow, and even knit my own scarf. I was fortunate enough to score a perfect duplicate of his umbrella. The really crazy thing about wearing this getup was that i knew this girl who was a virtual clone of Sarah Jane Smith. She jumped sky high when I scared her in the library while wearing the outfit. Good times. (Not to mention that I had a substitute teacher who was a doppelgänger for the second Romana/Princess Astra... no, I wasn't hallucinating!)

2) I was in a high school skit themed as "gangster version of a scene from Shakespeare". I reused the fourth Doctor fedora for that one. Fun.

3) I was a stuffed pumpkin for a kindergarten Halloween party. My mom made it with me.

4) A Native American girl

5) A cat. I used a heavy paper mâché mask for that one.

My very best was either Darth Vader or Bellatrix Lestrange. My favorite as a kid was Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi, I went as him 7 years I think.

I really want to do LOTR movie or Tolkien book costumes, but I need to lose a lot of weight before I'd feel comfortable doing that.

Not strictly new, but I’m back on a Mick Rory/Leonard Snart kick. And profoundly thankful for the people still writing fic for it.

I've gotten really into Bobby/Athena from 911 recently. I love that she's a strong woman and it seems like a true pairing of equals. I also think they have great chemistry and just are a great pairing.

It's not exactly new, but seeing the trailer for the new Cyrano de Bergerac musical revived my Cyrano/Roxanne feelings like a Halloween zombie lurching to life, and then someone mentioned they always wanted a happy ending Christian/Cyrano/Roxanne OT3 and my brain went "oooh," so now my brain keeps coming up with fic ideas I have no time to write.

Newest to me is Granada!Holmes/Watson *facepalm* I'm doing this consuming Sherlock-canons all backwards, I started with BBC!Sherlock when it first aired, now I'm watching the Granada series, and after I'm done with that, I plan on picking up one of the books. [As much as I love Cumberbatch, which is a lot, Brett!Holmes>>>Cumberbatch!Holmes. It's not his fault, it the crappy writing. Holmes is occasionally so stupid in the BBC series, it burns.]

Gender-swap fic (or art) recommendations?

Inspired by #1, does anyone have recs for gender-swap fanfic or fan-art?

There's a lot of genderbent DBZ fanart that works well, imho. Google any character's name and chances are you'll find some for that fandom.

Some of my favorite genderswapper stories include:

female Stiles Stilinski in Sink Us to Swim by mklutz (https://archiveofourown.org/works/905795) where Stiles and the Sheriff both become werewolves

female Stiles Stilinski in But I'm Not a Soldier by idyll (https://archiveofourown.org/works/421507) and in this one she pepper sprays those acting like assholes

female Stiles Stilinski in Put That Hurricane Away by skoosiepants (https://archiveofourown.org/works/4469051)

I also quite like izumi2's My Use and Value is What You Do (https://archiveofourown.org/works/18333815/chapters/43402055) so far

and a favorite author is RayShippouUchiha who has a few genderswapped stories that I've enjoyed:

female Naruto/Itachi - The Fox and the Weasel (https://archiveofourown.org/works/28978596)

female Tony Stark in their The Components of Construction series (https://archiveofourown.org/series/495916) and one of those stories also includes a female Peter Parker

They also have female Kurosaki Ichigo (Bleach) and female Midoriya Izuku (My Hero Academic) stories as well but they aren't fandoms I follow so I haven't read them.

I hate moving.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-20 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Packing sucks. Getting rid of stuff sucks. Loading sucks. Unloading sucks. Unpacking sucks.

And there is a not insignificant amount of time just standing and staring at all the stuff I have yet to pack.

I genuinely like most of my stuff, but it's times like these I wish I was much more of a minimalist (sometimes I have no trouble giving up things I don't use anymore or things I acquired at some point but never used, but sometimes it is wrenching).

Does AO3 let you permanently filter out tags yet? I know there's a way to do this for authors, and I remember reading that there was something in the works to do the same for tags - does anyone know if this happened?
