Growing F!S

(Anonymous) 2021-10-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Like OP of #1, I’d love for F!S to grow. But unlike that OP, I don’t even have fannish friends to recommend it to.

Any suggestions? Have you ever tried plugging the comm on another site?

I plugged it a couple times on my Tumblr back when I was active on there. I really haven't been active anywhere except here in a little while, though.

I bet we could get it onto the livejournal trending segment, if we went back there and said we were sorry.

You trying to recruit cobwebs and tumbleweeds? That and about seven sad zombie apocalypse survivors are all that's left at lj.

What happened?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-22 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Why would F!S need to apologize? What's the lore here?

You can keep crowing about this all you want, but you’re never going to be right about it.

Would it be possible to plug this website to non-fandom people on the premise that it's about shows and media moreso than fandom itself? You might get a bunch of normies and trolls for a while, but I think they'd either leave quickly or stick around and adjust.

As much as I love FS, I suspect that fandom has just moved on from this format. I also suspect that a lot of people who remember the good old days here and on LJ are old enough that they've moved on. Fandom isn't a very welcome or embraceable place these days, in my experience anyway.

Last of all, the new format of watching means there just isn't time to build the level of squee about fandoms. Questions are answered oh so quickly. Pairings rise and fall in the blink of an eye, kind of thing.

Ooo, yes, Oods are awesome.

I saw an Ood cosplay at a con and I was so enchanted. They had the light ball and everything.

I was like a little kid seeing Santa ringing a bell at the grocery store.

So many. Ones I particularly love:

Elves, dwarves, vampires, Narn, Minbari, Jafa, Klingons, dragons (sapient dragons are awesome), whatever species Yoda and Yaddle are, Zabrak, Twi'lek, Mon Calamari, Borg, Bajoran, Cardassian, Galifreyans, Daleks, fantasy demons, the Tolkien specific Ainur (but there are similar sorts of species in other fantasy things), orcs (I love all the different takes on them), other formsof shifter species besides werewolves.

In terms of aliens, I want alien. I like Star Trek but I haaaaate that Gene Roddenberry made the rule that all aliens have to be humans with shit on their heads. Ferengi are the least human-looking but their culture is gross. The Orville meanwhile has a slime blob for a character, and that's more like it (although the character is gross and idk what they're going to do without Norm MacDonald now). Rick & Morty has the luxury of animation to design the wildest aliens with zero explanation for them, and I enjoy that.

Non-humans in the fantasy sense, I'm bored with the same old same old. Elves? Meh. Vampires? Yawn. The Suikoden games had 1-2 new completely demihuman peoples in every game and some of them are my absolute favorites of all time. Their take on kobolds being dog-people? Sure. Lizards? Hell yeah! I'll still take elves and goblins but the more boundary-stretching there is, the more I'm interested.

All of the alien species in the Animorphs series are freaking excellent. My favorite sci-fi aliens by far.

Question for people who have watched Squid Game and Battle Royale

[personal profile] mishey22 2021-10-22 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I was wondering how they compare, violence-wise? Is Squid Game about the same, or is it worse (meaning more graphic)? Or even less? Thanks in advance!

Re: Question for people who have watched Squid Game and Battle Royale

(Anonymous) 2021-10-22 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say about the same. If you can handle the violence in Battle Royale, you should be fine with Squid Game.

More detail: There are way more people to begin with on Squid game so there are way more actual deaths whereas in Battle Royale there's only the one class to begin with. However, they are often very quick, not lingered over, background deaths. There is a notable scene with pretty brutal fighting but the lights are dark and flickering (there is screaming though). However, you do see some pretty gorey scenes in Squid Game. But once again, it's not that much worse than the collars exploding in Battle Royale.

***spoiler- there are two scenes of organ farming that are pretty graphic and a prominent display of three hanged corpses***

The violence and death in Squid Game felt a little cartoonish, IMO.

There are some pretty gory deaths, but I was more shocked by the surprise of them, if that makes sense. The first time competitors who lose are killed, it's like...WTF, and then you get inured to it in a way because you realize the stakes, and then it's shocking again.

I think Battle Royale was kinda harder to watch for me because it involved teens who didn't choose to be there.

Life is weird sometimes

(Anonymous) 2021-10-22 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
A guy just yelled out of a passing car that I need to stop shitting on the sidewalk.

... I have never and hope never to shit on any sidewalk anywhere, but aside from hoping I never see the dude again and vice versa, I'm equal parts amused and glad he didn't figure out what I've actually been doing for the last few months that requires kneeling down on the sidewalk next to the bushes that open out into a big field...

I've been releasing live-caught mice. Today's may have been a small rat.

I hope he does see you again. Maybe he'll get his mind blown when he sees how fast your shit can run!
