then... why do you say it? that seems a strange thing to lie about.

OP

Honestly, it took me a while to realize that what I do is hatewatching. I don't understand hatewatching of the type I usually encounter... people who seem to have no other investment other than how much they hate the thing. I still don't get what keeps them watching.

For me, it's really specifically the frustration about adapting material badly. And I don't usually keep watching past one movie or a few TV episodes.

Someone actually watched Life on Mars (US)?

And is now also watching Ghosts (US)?

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I (obviously) can't recommend either. But Ghosts seems like it might be marginally better than Life on Mars was. There isn't really the same high-concept stuff to fuck up. And Ghosts might still find its way to something mildly original. The first four episodes seem like the UK version, plus awkward gloss and HGTV references. With a little time, they might find their own voice.

being human us is good y'all are just annoying anglophiles

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I was put off by what felt like a lack of chemistry between the main characters, but I only saw an episode or two. Do you feel like it got stronger as it went on?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT, but same question. I gave it about half a season before I called it quits, but the lack of chemistry between the mains just made it kind of offputting and dull.

As long as you're not hanging out online and being obnoxious to people who like the thing, it's all good.

The American Life on Mars was disappointing, I didn't even finish. The American version of Taskmaster was even worse. What a wasted opportunity. :(

Sorry, Being Human wasn't a bad adaptation.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Excuse you, Being Human US is the superior show.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
International versions of Taskmaster in the category of "bad adaptations" made me lol.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
…have you seen the US version?

I like the other versions I’ve seen, but that one is a definite miss.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I really specifically picked the US version, which I think was pretty universally panned.

They made a movie of The House with a Clock in the Walls?! I thought I was the only one who ever read that book.

And the thing I remember about it the most wasn't anything about the clock or main plot but the weird side plot about the MC becoming friends with a popular kid in his class and then out of nowhere the kid does one jerky thing and at the end the MC tells his guardians they were never meant to be friends anyway but that's okay, he has a new best friend! Who never came up in the story and we're just hearing about for the first time now! It was really weird and kind of "stick with your own kind" ish and totally ruined the book, so if the adaptation did that better or took it out, it's automatically better than the book.

I remember the book a little. I remember the Edward Gorey art much more.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don’t remember that part. I liked the vaguely creepy tone of the book and avoided the movie because it looked significantly more “fun and wacky”.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, they made a movie. I loved the book as a kid, but I was suspicious as soon as I knew they'd cast Jack Black.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I love that you included Sleuth. I caught the original on the late show one night and was fascinated by its fiendish brilliance. I was SO disappointed in the remake.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I’m so glad you commented on that! It gets mentioned pretty rarely, but I thought I’d slip it in, just in case someone recognized it. I completely agree that the original was great and the remake was awful despite Michael Caine.

Life on Mars

Are you talking about the US adaptation?

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought it totally failed to get the fun/intentionally-awkward vibe of the UK version. And then the ending was just unfortunate.

NAYRT but I think maybe AYRT thinks the image in your secret is the UK version. I originally planned to respond to your secret that the UK was the original; the thumbnail in the secret looks so much like the UK version until I zoomed in very close. The styling is spot on, I’ll give LOM US that much.
