So what do we all think? Is the Earth waking up to entering a new period of volcanic activity, or is this year just a statistical anomaly that will see things returning to mean in a year or so's time.

Also, and for you end of the world fantasists out there, which volcanic region would you like to see light up again. Me, I'd like to violate all we know of geology, volcanology, and even the laws of physics itself, and see one of the truly ancient Scottish volcanic stubs go boom. Maybe Bass Rock or Ailsa Craig, just to get some tsunami action in there. It'd be fun to have the BBC not have to cash a travel voucher to report on a volcano for once.

Ah, a big kaboomie. Or a mid sized eruption, as the Volcanologists call it. Because even that nightmare year wasn't from one of the really big ones, or even smaller big ones. I did read somewhere that one of them thought that Iceland was going into a period of continental crust formation, basically a new Deccan Traps, and if they are right then we might be truly fucked. Thankfully it was just one of the fringe theorists though.

I flunked my way out of my first try at four year university, but I still remember learning about the Deccan Traps in one of my classes. Wasn't there a theory that the meteorite impact that killed the dinosaurs basically sent a shockwave through the earth and punched hell volcanoes out the other side?

But the amount we're seeing now is fine, no 30,000 year eruptions or Yellowstone supervolcano in the next eon or so, please.

That was theory for a while, but with more refined dating the dates don't really match up as they were going for a while, as were dinosaur extinctions, before the impact delivered the final coup de grace. The current theory is that it is what is now the Reunion Hotspot was under what would become India due to plate tectonics.

There already is a theory. As the ice sheets melt and sea levels rise, the change in distribution of weight on the plates will cause an increase in volcanic activity. That theory's been around for like 15 years now.

Basically, it's just another way humanity has fucked itself over.
