There’s a point in one of the IoI books where a woman is transformed into a man and realizes that men constantly struggle against the urge to rape women. If Anthony thinks that’s a normal thing for guys, then frankly, that explains a lot about Anthony.

I'm never going to reread these, probably, because I don't want to see all the places they deeply fail to hold up to my adult judgement, but FUCK the premise was so good and the worldbuilding was FUN and interesting

this was maybe my very first blush with the 'celestial fantasy' kind of subgenre which is one of my very favorites, and I'll always have a soft spot for the series for that. And shit, but the way the different books interweaved? MCU WISHES it had what Incarnations had

I liked this series a bunch when I was in High School, but the more I read the more unsettled I got. And now that I know more about the guy and his work... I'm out.

But I do think the ideas are cool and I'd love to see it adapted and updated and filtered through other peoples' visions. I'm ready to wait until PA dies or is otherwise out of the picture for it.

I really liked both this and Xanth when in high school, and I also remember that slow creeping build of "Wait, this is... is he being ironic here? Surely he's being ironic." *reads more* "Okay, this is... actually unpleasant. What the hell?"

I actually have been going through my bookcases and reading a bunch of books I haven't touched for decades, and found an old copy of a Xanth book and decided to re-read it, and it's just... unrelentingly yuck. Not even the big awful things, but the small observations constantly about what women are like and what men are like, and always the stupidest trite sexist observations.

I *swear* i read the first book (that cover just sticks in the mind, as they all do), but just now, re-reading the Wiki summary.... I remember nothing of that.

I read these first in my late teens/early twenties.

i tried reading them again in my early 40s.

They didn't hold up as well.

So no, no TV or movie adaption please. Leave them in the past where they and Anthony belong.
