Hate to sound blasé, but so? It was centuries ago. If Japan can be excused because they 'wanted to be like Britain ' then you should really be laying all of this at the Romans' doors anyway.

News just in, Roman Empire only ended a hundred years ago. You heard it here first, folks.

If Japan is excused because they were copying the Brits, then you can't hold it against Britain for copying the Romans.

It may have been a couple of centuries ago, but it set up a lot of problems that are still plaguing the world today.

Yes? But that's true of a huge number of historical events. Also, the Communist party - which is responsible for China's biggest problems of censorship and tendency towards genocide - had its roots in things completely unrelated to that history.

Who's excusing Japan? (Besides, obviously, Japan)

The comment above:

'Even then it was only due to the absolute inventiveness of the Japanese in trying to be the next British Empire that pipped England to the post of absolute worst thing to happen to China.'

Still not excusing Imperial Japan though. It explains some of their actions, but still holds them to account for being the worst.

I'm not sure who you think is excusing Japan of it's crimes, other than Japan and that is not going down well with the rest of East Asia currently. Something being centuries ago doesn't mean that the knock-on effects aren't still there, or that they should be wiped away like they never happened. We'll never learn if we ignore the bad things that have been done.

Every single country has had bad things happen to it at the hands of another. At the same time, with very few exceptions, almost every country has done despicable things. Ranging from small to the Holocaust or the Khmer Rouge.

The very country you're talking about, China, has had bad things happen in the past. None of that has been left out of the history books. And yet they're currently attempting a genocide of the Uighurs.

We are, it seems, incapable of learning.

From the comment above: 'Even then it was only due to the absolute inventiveness of the Japanese in trying to be the next British Empire that pipped England to the post of absolute worst thing to happen to China.'

No matter how many times you copy and paste this, it still won’t say what you clearly want it to say. This comment does not excuse Imperial Japan at all. It’s just acknowledging that Japan and England were both horrible to China. Which is true.
