as a queer person that says this about some things i ship, ehhh, there are layers to this beyond "i want my ship to be canon". i usually don't even want them to be canon, even if they would be good rep! because ships becoming canon often ruins them as they're then shoehorned into stereotypical roles by heteronormative writers instead of being left as they are.

if i say a ship would be good representation, it's because the things i tend to ship are non-heteronormative queer ships with non-stereotypical ship dynamics. and for that ship dynamic to be canonified on screen would sometimes be incredibly representative. sometimes i wanna see different kinds of ships represented, and obviously then i ship certain characters because they have the dynamic i wish were portrayed on screen as romantic for once!

as for that being convenient, i can't exactly go about wishing for that between characters i dont know in a show i don't watch, can i?

Just because it is my favorite ship doesn't mean it wouldn't also be great representation. Those two things can both be true.

One of the more ridiculous "it would be good rep" are those boys from 9-1-1. Um, is this the same 9-1-1 with a Black lesbian couple? But putting the two young dudes together is the thing that would be good LGBTQ rep. Whatever.

i can't say i do this, but i don't think it's a weird thing to happen. people are likely to be interested in ships they can identify with in some way and people are likely to want to see representation they can identify with.

i agree with your last line though, it's shipping, people, it doesn't need to be good by any measure

I mostly ignore it, but I do get annoyed when particular factions act like they are somehow uniquely deserving of having their ship made canon, because Reasons, or their ship is somehow more progressive. Because then, it really isn't about representation, it's that they want their ship to be canon.

Unless it's somewhat obvious from the beginning, fandom ships becoming canon tend to ruin things for me. Regardless of whether I ship them or not.

Meh. I'm generally of the mind that most iconic characters that people find cool and/or aspirational are good rep in the broadest sense. So like, Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, The Doctor, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger...lol Jesus.

It's really bumming me out that I can't think of more iconic female characters who are ubiquitous enough in popular culture that it would feel impactfully subversive if they were revealed to be gay/bi/pan. But then, I guess part of that is also down to the double standards in how we view (and enforce) male vs female sexuality. Like, if MCU canon made Nat bi I would be like, wow really i'm shocked, shocked at there is cunniligus going on at her establishment.

But yes, in generally I do think there are certain characters who would be more-than-usually "great rep" if they were made explicitly queer in canon, due to the fact that they are well-established, broadly-respected pop-cultural touchstones.

That said, "great rep" has the potential to take an unlimited number of forms. And, of course, even something that's great in concept can end up shitty in execution. Plus it's definitely true that some fans can be dismissive or even hostile towards actual canonical rep when it isn't the specific rep they wanted.

So personally I see both sides of this one. *shrugs*

I don't mind people wishing out loud that characters they like would be queer or in a same-sex relationship, that's fine. What I object to is when they say canon queer characters are not gay enough (usually in favour of two white men) or calling queer creators homophobic for doing something they don't like.

Honestly so much about shipping fandom has changed from people liking the idea of characters together, to flat-out expecting it to happen and then crying foul when it doesn't even if the media in question never promised it. It's even more irritating when the media has LGBT characters, the crying about rep comes off as so disingenuous and fake. People don't have to like every gay character or ship, lord knows I don't like some canon-LGBT out there, but I cannot take people complaining about 'needing LGBT rep' in a show that already has it or accusing the creators of homophobia because their pet ship isn't canon. Like... really.

I kind of understand the shippers' point of view, though. Because rep is good, but sometimes not all rep is equivalent. Like imagine wanting Finn/Poe Star Wars to be canon (as two fairly prominent characters in the movies, who have had onscreen interaction and Oscar Isaac supporting the ship) and then somebody says, nah, don't be stupid, you should just be happy with those two background lesbians kissing in TRoS. Which is very ?????. Or what if Poe was randomly paired up with some unnamed male pilot at the end of TRoS who we've never seen in the prior movies.

I'm not saying that miniscule rep should never happen, but I can't help but sympathize with fandom for wishing for more from their main character favorites.

I didn't like Shang Chi.
I just couldn't get into it, and I don't enjoy reading foreign language subtitles. I hope they just drop the whole subtitled dialogue for the sequel. We don't need it. We can understand the Chinese Actors in a Chinese Setting are probably speaking Chinese among themselves, there was no need for the flipping back and forward. Who is that even for? Not the characters, and if it is for the audience then I'll remind you that all dialogue is for the audience's benefit so it doesn't matter if they are speaking to the western audience in English. Either commit to doing it full Chinese language for the Chinese audience, or don't.

And whatever deal they strike with Landrover next time, include a clause where the movie has to be more subtle about its anti-British position. I get it, British people will always be the second worst thing to happen to China, honestly I understand that, but if you are releasing the movie in England also then be at least a bit more subtle and clever about making that point.
