There are things that are extremely worth criticizing in Dune, though.

The problems are basically that (in general) social media makes discourse soul-deadening no matter the topic and (more specifically) there's a tendency for people on social media to act like they're the first people to ever think of a critique of a given concept, when in fact it's something people in SFF fandom have been arguing about for 60 years or whatever. It doesn't make them wrong but it is annoying. I think things would be a lot better if there were more awareness of older fandom stuff and the amount of continuity that actually exists.

True. All of it has been well discussed in the Dune fandom and anyone coming in like a crusader is not well received.

As a lifelong science-fiction fan (although one who has only recently got around to Dune) I think this comment is spot on. I won't deny the existence of fans who are blind to any criticism and take it very personally to the point of denial, but on the whole, most science-fiction fans have been critical of things in their genre for almost as long as they've been a fan.

DA.

The issue with antis isn't that they 'criticize.' The issues are mass callouts, bullying, doxxing, and other dangers. If a person is just calmly doing a feminist analysis on a text then they aren't really an anti.

But "if you ever even READ this book, you are [racist/sexist/homophobic] and automatically sign on for all the things on this old ass book is concerning with everything that goes with it.

I mean it seems like OP is talking about The Discourse broadly, not specifically mass callouts, bullying or doxxing.
