As a lifelong science-fiction fan (although one who has only recently got around to Dune) I think this comment is spot on. I won't deny the existence of fans who are blind to any criticism and take it very personally to the point of denial, but on the whole, most science-fiction fans have been critical of things in their genre for almost as long as they've been a fan.
