Actually, same for the last two fandoms I fell into. I realise the older I get, the fewer other same-age and same-mindset fans there are likely to be, but still.

I really don't begrudge the younger fanbase their fun, or their terrible fic, or anything else (except the callout BS, natch), I just wish it didn't make me feel so old and crotchety, or so unwelcome.

I got into a new fandom a few months ago and have been having a great time because most of the fans are lovely and their enthusiasm is wonderful, but boy do I feel old at times. None of these kids have heard of blocking tags and a small bunch seem to have made it their personal mission to harass anybody who writes/draws anything that they deem inappropriate for minors.

Funnily enough, my fandom has a light and fluffy canon with a few angsty moments, but a good chunk of the fan content is dark and depressing. It was bumming me out, so I started writing my own fluffy content because I found so little of it online.

When I was a teen, I remember discovering darker fanfic and how much of a cathartic release it was to read it. Dark fanfic helped me work through a lot of stuff from my past and essentially saved me. I often wonder if there are teens out there who are like I was and I worry about them.

I feel this. My current main fandom skews young. Not super young-- I think the median age is probably around 20. But that's definitely young enough that for me in my mid thirties it can be a bit exhausting, and I feel like what I want from fanfic is not what the majority wants. I also feel like I'm pickier/have higher standards for the fanworks I can enjoy.

Finding a group of like-minded fans, most of whom turned out to be 25+, definitely helped.

Just for curiosity's sake, I'd like knowing some examples of canon intended to a mature audience with a big youngish fandom with the same problems as the ones described in this secret.
Anyone has any example?

Experienced this recently to such an exaggerated and obnoxious degree that I had to leave the fandom.

The media in question was created by people in their 30s, with characters who were all in their 30s, but the fandom became completely swamped by teenagers who, based on nothing at all, went so far as to insist that it was meant for them and that all of the people who were 21+ were gross and weird for enjoying it.

The fic used to be interesting but within a few months became 100% self projection garbage, with fully grown characters acting and speaking like 15 year olds having an identity crisis. I eventually just gave up on trying to be involved, and stuck to the handful of fics that I'd found from a few years before all of the kids showed up.

Bwhahahahaha, honestly it's as good an explanation as any. I mean, the books themselves have plotholes and issues but when you look at the shows.... I love them! But coherent and consistent they are not. (Sometimes not even within a drama, let alone from one drama to another)

That would make so much sense to me! I've watched all of the dramas, even the movies, and the way it messes up timelines, plot, relationships, and so on is really something. This is both a valid explanation and hilariously funny!

Like, I'm not an anti, but a lot of what I hear about the gender stuff and roles is old enough or outdated enough commentary that I kinda don't know if I could ever get into it.

I initially was fine with fanart - and I am still, as long as it's about the show and universe itself. But seeing a bunch of lighter crossover art (like other fandom characters in the same situation, I think a specific one I saw was a MyHeroAcademia one where Toshinori was the old dude, which doesn't fit what we find out about either character) that isn't really trying to still go with the commentary or seeing huge youtube people play games based on it and "recreating it in real life" is all very... ew. I really feel like it's not one that you can do crossover work without diving into the social commentary it's about.

I don't know. I didn't feel this weirded out by fan content of, say, the Hunger Games. I mean, I kinda was, but less so with the surface-level crossovers. I think I was more amused by the lack of tact with the marketing then, so it might now just be I'm frustrated over the predictability of all this and how you can't expect a work like this to reach a big audience without it happening.
