Jesus christ, I've spent 20 years in fandom, including places like 4chan and Reddit as a young'un, in the good old days of Rule 34, and haven't seen things that appalling (unless I went deliberately looking, I won't lie). Where the FUCK are you hanging out that this is common?

Most of those examples were from RPF fandoms centered on youtube and twitch streamers. And I didn't even get to the part where people are sending the streamers donations asking their opinion on their NSFW fanworks about them. It got so bad, that some streamers started auto-banning anyone who brings up their shipname in chat. Back in my days people were mostly fantasizing about boy bands and Hollywood stars, now every kid on twitch averaging 100 viewers has a shipfic made of them.

Yeah, currently I'm in those fandoms too--still don't see that shit as often as you claim.

Clearly you follow better streamers, or the mods are just doing a good job cleaning up before you notice this.

What's the appeal of watching teenagers stream themselves playing video games anyway? There are some things that are less interesting than that but I can't think of many.

I mean, of course I know that it's humongous now. It baffles me, but whatever.

Find a better fandom and you won't see so much of this crap.

Fucking this

One word: viewer engagement. Successful streamers rarely actually play games, they mostly do chatting /reaction content, usually to videos, memes, and topics that the viewers pick for them. Even among the gamers, the most powerful ones are those who play slow, boring games that allow them to spend the entire stream just talking and interacting with the chat.

SA

Haha, sorry for the two words, I originally wrote "interactability" but then went back and changed it. It's getting late and I'm sleepy, so that's the end of this discussion for me.

So basically it encourages parasocial relationships with teenagers. Not fictional characters, not actors playing a role, but real actual teenage kids whose faces are on the screen that you can interact with without much filter...

And you don't understand why the very nature of that attracts waayyyyy more creeps than most other types of fandoms do? It's not that people don't believe you when you talk about the awful things you've seen. It's that it's such a bizarre outlier in fandom at large. Most people here are talking about mildly controversial fic, and you come in here like WHARRGBLARRGH FAKE VIDEO OF A REAL LIFE CHILD'S CORPSE BEING RAPED and everyone is like, what the fuck? And kind of worrying about you.
